Isn’t technology amazing? 🤯 After having both legs amputated after a climbing accident in 1982, bionics designer Hugh Herr (@hugh.herr) was determined to advance prosthetic technology that would eliminate his disability and help him return to the world of rock and ice climbing. In this 2014 #ThrowbackThursday, he explains how he did just that — and created a type of prosthetic design that helps people with disabilities run, climb and dance! “Bionics is not only about making people stronger and faster,” Herr says, adding that it can also help people live with dignity and without depression. So how does it work? Using synthetic skin tissue, data and imaging, he created bionic limbs that not only are extremely comfortable — but also can adapt and function like flesh and bones to perform different activities. And that is just the beginning! He says they can also help take us further and “bridge the gap between human limitation and human potential.” Want to know more? Bio-Inspired Kinematics: The Engineering of the Robotic Eagle 🦅⚙️ What looks like a bird is actually a masterclass in Unsteady Aerodynamics. By shifting from traditional propellers to Bio-Mimetic Flapping, this platform demonstrates the future of low-signature, high-efficiency aerial robotics. The Engineering of Avian Flight To replicate the flight profile of an eagle, this CAD-driven design must solve the complex physics of "Morphing Wings": Non-Linear Wing Articulation: Unlike a rigid-wing aircraft, a robotic eagle must independently control the "elbow" and "wrist" joints of the wing. This allows for the Clap-and-Fling mechanism, which generates high lift at low speeds. Elastic Energy Recovery: The system uses high-strength Carbon Fiber spars and flexure hinges that act like springs. This allows the robot to "recycle" the kinetic energy from the downstroke to assist in the upstroke, significantly extending battery life compared to traditional quadcopters. Bio-Acoustic Stealth: Propeller-based drones are loud and easily detected. Flapping-wing robots produce a low-frequency "thrum" that blends into the natural environment, making them ideal for Wildlife Monitoring and Discreet Surveillance. Beyond the Aesthetic: Functional Bionics This isn't just about looking like a bird; it's about adopting the Flight Envelopes of nature. These robots can glide to save energy, hover in strong headwinds, and land on unstructured perches—tasks that are energy-intensive or impossible for standard drones. The Engineering Question: When building for long-endurance flight, which is the superior path: Fixed-Wing efficiency (gliders), or Bio-Inspired Flapping (which offers better maneuverability in tight, wooded environments)?
