ATWatch closely as something really remarkable took place here. Captain Jasper Coutu, part of the ASI’s shark research team and a charter captain, was shark fishing off Block Island, RI when he caught and released this mako shark. But, how did he catch it?
Look closely and you will see that he actually hooked the EYE of a hook that was already in the the shark! That’s right! The point of his circle hook actually went through the eye of a hook that was in the shark! What are the odds of that? Even the captain had to look twice at this one!
The good news is that Captain Coutu cleaned up the shark, removed both hooks (one on the other side of the jaw), tagged it, and released it to continue on its way and to contribute to our study on the shortfin mako. We’ve never heard of that happening and now you can see it as well! 🦈 #shark #sharks #marinebiology #rhodeisland #sharkscience

AFBlock Island has a secret—and every summer, it’s hidden in plain sight.
As part of the Glass Float Project, artist Eben Horton (@theglassstationstudiogallery) tucks hundreds of handblown glass orbs along the island’s trails, and anyone lucky enough to spot one gets to take it home.
Travel writer @sleasca joined the fun this year, visiting Horton’s studio before hiding five orbs —including one near a scenic overlook you might already have on your Block Island bucket list.

RHTwo rehabbed sea turtles dipped their flippers into the warm waters of Block Island Sound on August 3, the first-ever sea turtle release the Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue Program has ever done in Rhode Island.
The critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, Dunton and Argo, were among 16 turtles admitted to the aquarium’s animal rescue program after being found cold-stunned on Cape Cod last fall.
They were initially triaged and treated by the National Marine Life Center in Bourne, Mass., for wounds, and later pneumonia, and malnourishment.
