Bonobos practice alloparenting, which means aunties, siblings, and even unrelated members of the group pitch in to help care for babies! This cooperative care strengthens social bonds, eases the burden on moms, and helps young bonobos learn how to be great parents themselves one day.

Five months old with five teeth — bonobo Winstel is growing fast! As he gets older, Winstel is becoming more interactive with his surroundings and showing off more of his personality. He’s endlessly curious about everything around him — especially the other bonobos in his troop and the keepers who care for him. Kibibi, a very attentive first‑time mom, is slowly giving him more freedom to explore. She’ll let him toddle around on the habitat floor (never more than a foot away!) before scooping him back in. Under her close watch, he’s even started climbing on the mesh and firehose, though she doesn’t let him get too far. Winstel is also beginning to socialize more. Nadine, Bob, and Gander spend the most time with him, and Kibibi has recently started allowing Bob and Gander to give him a few gentle tickles — a big step for a protective new mom. He’s hitting new milestones, too, including mouthing different foods, though he’s still a bit young to eat solids just yet. We’re excited to keep watching Winstel grow and can’t wait to share more updates as he reaches new milestones!

Essa proximidade genética explica por que temos estruturas corporais semelhantes, expressões faciais parecidas e até comportamentos sociais comparáveis, como cuidado parental, formação de grupos e uso de ferramentas.
