migratory birds are beginning to arrive in our area, including american woodcock. this unique bird often travels through the city of buffalo where they find many obstacles and can collide with windows, often with lethal results. this bird was one of the lucky ones. he arrived with head trauma and an ulcer on one eye, but no bleeding or damage was seen on the inside of his eyes. after treatment for head trauma and eye drops to heal the ulcer, it was time to check him for release. i took him out to assess for strong flight and normal vision, and he passed the test! this evening at dusk, he will be released so he can continue on to his breeding grounds to do his “sky dance” and find a mate. #timberdoodle #americanwoodcock #bringbirdsback #wildliferehabilitation

Each spring, migratory birds travel thousands of miles to reach their breeding grounds, only to face deadly threats in our cities and neighborhoods. Over one billion birds die in the U.S. every year from window collisions. We can change that. Turn off non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Make windows safer with simple, affordable bird-friendly treatments. Be part of the change. If you find a bird sitting or lying on the sidewalk, it has hit a window and needs YOUR help. Please pick it up gently and place it in a paper bag (ideally) or whatever is available. The bird may get stepped on or swept up if you wait for someone else to help. Keep the bag in a quiet spot until you can bring it to WBF or a wildlife rehabber near you. Note: Lying down doesn’t mean dead! Please check. Report all birds you find, dead or injured to dbird.org. The newly released 2025 #StateOfTheBirds report for the U.S. reveals continued declines in North American bird populations. “#BirdsTellUs that we have alarming declines across all habitats,” says Audubon’s Chief Conservation Officer Marshall Johnson. The report identifies 112 Tipping Point species that have lost half their populations in the past 50 years. That includes 42 red-alert species facing perilously low populations, such as Allen's Hummingbird, Tricolored Blackbird, and Saltmarsh Sparrow—birds that are at risk without immediate intervention. Audubon worked with a coalition of partners to summarize the latest science on birds to ensure their long-term health in the places where you live. Hold it, right there! At the Cornell Feeders, a Cooper's Hawk perches on a fencepost nearby. The Hairy Woodpecker latched to the suet feeder senses the hawk and remains motionless, while also trying to stay out of the line of sight of its potential predator. Many prey species will opt to employ this tactic of freezing in place to avoid detection by a predator, especially one that's adept at capturing birds in flight like the Cooper's Hawk. #birdcams #live #nowplaying #nature #wildlife #bird #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdfeeding #bringbirdsback #🐦 #cornell #woodpecker #coopershawk

Watch the 4-week-old Northern Royal Albatross chick from the Top Flat nest receive a scheduled weight check from a New Zealand Department of Conservation ranger on February 20! The ranger calmly places the chick in a bag before taking the measurement with a handheld scale. The Top Flat chick weighed in at a healthy 2.3 kgs (~5.1 lbs). The younger nestling from the nearby Top Flat Track nest (located in frame, to the right) was also weighed on the same day. The 19-day-old chick weighed in at 1.4 kgs (~3.1 lbs), a healthy weight at this age. #birdcams #live #nowplaying #nature #wildlife #bird #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdfeeding #bringbirdsback #🐦 #newzealand #albatross The #RoyalCam is in collaboration with the New Zealand Department of Conservation.

In the U.S. alone, collisions with glass kill over one billion birds every year. Researchers at Western University’s bird tunnel testing facility show what fails: a single decal or sticker. Birds see the open spaces and slam into the glass. Here’s how you stop collisions: Add external patterns of dots, stripes, or films spaced 2” apart. Hang vertical cords 4” apart. Take these simple, cost-effective steps and save countless birds. Learn more throught the link in our bio. Two Common Ravens are back at the Ontario FeederWatch Cam, showing more signs of courtship. Paired ravens may gently clasp one another’s partially open bills and sometimes even grasp a partner’s foot. They also preen one another, inviting attention by holding still and bowing the head to expose the back of the neck, or tilting the head back to reveal the throat. “Kingfishers have these really elongated beaks, they taper down into a point. And he saw this kingfisher dive into the water to capture a fish below the surface and he noticed that there was virtually no splash. And the design of the kingfisher's beak became the inspiration for the new design of the high speed rail train.” Learn more about biomimicry from Billy Almon and adrienne maree brown in the season premiere of Bring Birds Back Season 7!
