“Bulls on Parade” — Rage Against the Machine (1996) Released on the album Evil Empire, Bulls on Parade is one of the most explosive protest songs of the ’90s. It fuses rap, metal, funk, and hardcore punk into a sound that felt confrontational, urgent, and impossible to ignore. Lyrically, the track attacks militarism, corporate power, and state violence. Zack de la Rocha’s delivery is sharp and uncompromising, while Tom Morello’s guitar—using unconventional techniques like toggle-switch scratching—turns the instrument into a weapon of resistance rather than a traditional rock lead. The result was seismic. Bulls on Parade didn’t just dominate alternative radio; it became a rallying cry at protests, concerts, and political movements worldwide. Nearly three decades later, its message remains painfully relevant—proof that great protest music doesn’t age, it escalates. 🔥 Loud. Political. Relentless. This is rock as confrontation. #RageAgainstTheMachine #BullsOnParade #EvilEmpire #90sRock #RapMetal PoliticalRock ProtestMusic TomMorello ZackDeLaRocha RockHistory AlternativeRock

Its title refers to the machinery of war—corporations, politicians, and military leaders—that “parade” as they profit from conflict. The live performance at Pinkpop 1996 came just weeks after the album’s release, bringing the song to a massive European festival audience. Tom Morello’s signature wah-driven riff and Zack de la Rocha’s relentless delivery turn the track into both a rallying cry and a sonic demonstration of resistance. The song’s lasting impact lies in its clarity. While many 1990s bands leaned toward introspection, Rage centered global politics and systemic critique, positioning themselves as one of the few mainstream acts openly challenging U.S. foreign policy and corporate power through music. — #RageAgainstTheMachine #BullsOnParade #EvilEmpire #TomMorello #ZackDeLaRocha BradWilk

This Woodstock ’99 performance still ignites pure rage. Song: Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine (Live at Woodstock ’99) Rage Against the Machine formed in 1991 in Los Angeles, fusing explosive rap-metal with fierce political activism against oppression, capitalism, and authority. Their self-titled debut and Evil Empire made them legends for uncompromised fury, innovative guitar work by Tom Morello, and Zack de la Rocha’s commanding delivery. They influenced rap-rock, protest music, and activism worldwide. Fans still love them in 2026 for the timeless rebellion and how their anthems fuel resistance in turbulent times. Bulls on Parade released in 1996 on Evil Empire, a high-octane rap-metal track slamming military power, media manipulation, and systemic violence with killer riffs, turntable scratches, and the rallying “they rally ’round the family / with a pocket full of shells” hook. It became a protest staple and live powerhouse. This legendary July 24, 1999 Woodstock ‘99 set captures RATM destroying the East Stage with intense energy, crowd chaos, and that signature fury amid the festival’s infamous unrest. Clips from this performance went mega-viral over the years. In 2026 fans online call it one of the most powerful live moments in rock history, saying the raw anger, guitar innovation, and crowd response still hit like a revolution. April 13, 1996 @rageagainstthemachine performs on #SaturdayNightLive and gets banned. In an act of protest against guest host Steve Forbes, #RATM hung a pair of upside-down American flags from their amps before playing what was supposed to be the first of two songs for the night, “Bulls on Parade.” SNL stagehands removed the flags just seconds before their performance. As the band waited in the dressing room and prepared to play their second song, “Bullet in the Head,” they were told by SNL officials they had to leave immediately. They didn’t leave quietly. #rageagainstthemachine #snl #throwback #tbt #music #onthisday

Bulls on Parade — Rage Against the Machine (1996) Released in 1996 on the album Evil Empire, “Bulls on Parade” became one of Rage Against the Machine’s most explosive and politically charged songs. With Tom Morello’s revolutionary guitar work and Zack de la Rocha’s intense delivery, the track blends rap, metal, and funk into a powerful protest anthem. Known for its iconic guitar solo that mimics DJ scratching, the song criticizes the military-industrial complex and the influence of corporate power. Decades later, it still hits with the same energy and urgency that made Rage Against the Machine one of the most influential bands of the 90s. #rageagainstthemachine #ratm #90srock #alternativerock #rapmetal 🎸

Rage Against The Machine were locked in a room by the Secret Service following this controversial ‘Saturday Night Live’ performance 📺 Appearing on the show in 1996, Rage Against The Machine’s performance coincided with billionaire Republican and then-presidential candidate Steve Forbes hosting the episode. Forbes and the band represented opposite ends of the political spectrum, which heightened tensions on the show. Therefore, the pioneering rap-rock outfit took into their own hands to voice their disgust at the presence of Forbes. “One thing I think is very important is to weave your convictions into your vocation, whatever it is,” guitarist Morello explained in the new documentary Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years Of SNL Music, which aired on January 27th. Moments before the band were due to perform their first song, ‘Bulls On Parade’, upside-down US flags were draped over the amplifiers, leading to a scuffle between Rage and the SNL crew. Morello recalled, “The stage manager is barking into his headset like, ‘Take those down right now!’” Following ‘Bulls On Parade’, Morello and the group were told that their scheduled performance of ‘Bullet In The Head’ had been cancelled. Frustrated with this, bassist Tim Commerford chose to head across the hall into Steve Forbes’ dressing room. “He took one of the American flags, and he tore it up, and he knotted it into a ball. You might call it a weapon,” Morello remembered. “And he entered Steve Forbes’ dressing room across the way to attack him.” Forbes himself was not in the room at the time–though multiple members of his family were–and the bassist’s makeshift projectile did not do any damage. However, Forbes was a presidential candidate at the time. “The hallway floods with Secret Service. We’re now locked in our room. They’re protecting Steve Forbes and his family,” the guitarist shared. “We get escorted out and put on the sidewalk at 30 Rock. You might notice Rage is not in the farewells on that particular show. I still went to the after party [Laughs].” #RATM #SNL #FarOutMagazine

Rage Against The Machine- Bulls on Parade (1996) This song deals with the US military (the bulls) and their aggressive tactics. It mentions how the arms industry encourages war to get military contracts with lines like, "Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need, just feed the war cannibal-animal," and "What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and moving." The song is from Rage Against The Machine's second album, Evil Empire, whose title is a reference to US president Ronald Reagan's description of the former Soviet Union. #rageagainstthemachine #ratm #90srock #alternativerock

Repost from @revolvermag ✊🏽 Rage Against the Machine released the single “Bulls on Parade” #onthisday in 1996! For all the drum nerds… that kit is a 1970’s @ludwigdrumshq that Brendan O’Brien gifted me after the band spent some time down in Atlanta attempting to write and record our second record. Brendan also was at SNL mixing this performance for us. We wound up using this same kit (different snare though) for the recording of People of the Sun which was the first song we recorded for our 2nd attempt at Evil Empire at Cole rehearsal studios in Los Angeles.
