Cairn Holy Chambered Cairns, located in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, are two Neolithic burial monuments dating to around 4000 BC. They feature stone chambers used for communal burials and rituals. Cairn Holy I is larger, with a curved façade and evidence of ceremonial fires, while Cairn Holy II is smaller and linked to the legend of a mythical king. Both cairns are now roofless due to stone removal over time. A small but fascinating corner of Cherry Hinton is beginning to attract attention again. With the current clearance work taking place at Giant’s Grave / Spring Head, people are starting to notice the site once more. What many don’t realise is that this spot marks the source of one of our local chalk springs and brooks, and that it was also the focus of historical and archaeological investigations carried out there some years ago. These are the Nether Largie standing stones. The large central stone is marked with 23 cup marks, or circular depressions, three of which have signs of surrounding ring marks. One of the pair of south-westerly stones also has three cup marks. The remaining stones appear to be unmarked. This structure was built around 3,200 years ago. The interesting thing about this date is that cup and ring carvings are thought to date back to a period 1,500 years earlier still. This suggests that the two stones carrying cup marks were quarried from somewhere nearby, where they had been carved all that time previously.. There is additionally an outlying stone 100m to the north of the north-easterly stones, and another, which is no longer visible, 300m to the west of the central stone.
