Happening this week- CCAMLR what? The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) was established by international convention in 1982 with the objective of conserving Antarctic marine life. This meeting happens once a year and this week, scientists have been gathering in Hobart, Tasmania to discuss our Southern Ocean. Why do I care? Whale, whales need krill and we need to best manage the food they eat. Krill are a keystone species in the Southern Ocean- meaning they are incredibly important to the entire functioning of the marine ecosystem, from the bottom up! #ccamIr #krill #antarctica #hobart #tasmania #whales #whales

The Southern Ocean covers just 10% of the world’s oceans, yet absorbs around 40% of all human-produced CO₂, helping to regulate the planet’s climate. At its heart lies krill - tiny crustaceans that feed whales, seals, penguins and seabirds, and play a vital role in capturing and storing carbon in the deep sea. But this balance is breaking. Industrial fleets are already removing over 400,000 tonnes of krill every year, primarily to feed farmed fish and produce supplements. Now, the industry is lobbying to double catch limits, threatening to collapse one of Earth’s most critical ecosystems and accelerate the climate crisis. The planet can’t afford that risk. Antarctica is protected by the Antarctic Treaty System, an international agreement that prioritizes peace, science, and conservation. One key body is CCAMLR — the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. Ironically, it was founded in 1982 to monitor the growing exploitation of krill — the tiny crustaceans that feed nearly all Antarctic wildlife. The very issue we're facing today. What started as oversight of krill fishing has grown into one of the world’s most important ecosystem-based ocean management systems. With 27 member countries, including the U.S., EU, Russia, China, Australia, and Argentina. Climate change is catalyzing rapid alterations to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean ecosystems. It’s time to step up, and at the 42nd Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), three proposed marine protected areas await action. On this global stage, delegates from around the world convene to assess the current state of the region’s ecosystems and offer changes to their existing conservation strategy. Earlier this week, the CCAMLR scientific committee released their Marine Ecosystem Assessment for the Southern Ocean Summary for Policymakers. Wherein the experts concluded, “Strategies for conserving Southern Ocean marine biodiversity, including management of fisheries, need to be further developed, based on current knowledge of the implications of climate change, to ensure resilience of Southern Ocean ecosystems into the future.” We urge the delegates to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendations, not only to ensure the success of the Antarctic and the Southern Ocean’s habitats but also for the global ocean, whose prosperity is tied to the region. Antarctica and the Southern Ocean bear the weight of our ocean’s future with their influence on global atmospheric and water temperatures, nutrient cycling, and food availability. This week is vitally important for the future of Antarctica. The member countries of CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) are meeting in Santiago, Chile, to define a path to unlock the creation of marine areas that have been stalled for years. The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the priority sites to be protected. Chile and Argentina presented a joint proposal to create a major marine protected area that will serve to safeguard unique marine life from threats such as intensive krill fishing and climate change. The images in this short film were taken by Pristine Seas on an unprecedented scientific expedition with scientists of Chile and Argentina aboard the Chilean Navy vessel OPV Fuentealba. The scientific studies carried out during this expedition confirmed the exceptional value of this Antarctic ecosystem, but also its fragility. The protection of the Antarctic Peninsula is urgent and we hope that the international community will step up now.
