CMV results & other updates! This week we had a few appointments with Sully—his usual transplant clinics and blood draw, a kidney ultrasound and a follow up with his urology team for the first time post-transplant. First off, from his labs we learned he is still positive for the CMV infection, but the amount showing up in his body is decreasing a lot. He should beat this very soon! Woohoo! Secondly, all other kidney labs remain stable which is music to our ears. Today, we also had a kidney ultrasound done. This was the first ultrasound since our stay in the ICU for the transplant. Again, a huge praise report that everything still looks perfect and they have zero concerns about the kidney. Finally, we met with our urologist (who we adore!) and all agreed that for now the system we have in place—Sully’s vesicostomy—is sufficient. It is safest to keep his new kidney decompressed, and prevents the issue that cause all of this from happening (urine backing up into the kidney) to happen again. We will continue to see urology, but a bit less frequently for now, every six months or so. In the meantime we will wait and pray for Sully’s bladder to grow with him. How his bladder changes with age/growth will determine the path we take for the future when it comes time for closing his vesicostomy up. There’s a lot of options, and we just need more time to find the best and longest lasting solution for him! But right now, the vesicostomy is working perfectly and causing zero issues. All in all very good news! CMV is a common, usually harmless, viral infection that most of us get at some point in our lives. But if you are pregnant and get CMV for the first time, your baby can get the infection, leading to serious illness and lasting disabilities in some babies. CMV (HSV-5) doesn’t get nearly as much attention as EBV — but it’s part of the same herpesvirus family and can behave in similar ways. It can remain in the body long term, and there’s often no clear outward sign to point you toward it. That’s why testing matters. CMV has been associated with: • Ongoing fatigue • Neurological symptoms • GI-related conditions • Immune suppression patterns • Increased cardiovascular risk It’s also not uncommon to see CMV and EBV together. When symptoms don’t fully resolve or feel layered, sometimes it’s because more than one virus is involved. Awareness creates options. Comment below if you want to keep following this series. Wie loopt er dus het meeste risico? #Moeders, die #zwanger zijn van hun volgende spruit. Ik kreeg CMV in de eerste weken van mijn zwangerschap. Door klachten prikte ik bloed… CMV. 50% kans dat ons kind besmet zou zijn en nooit zou kunnen lopen, zitten, horen… Mentaal beperkt, groeiachterstand, epilepsie, hersenafwijkingen. De lijst was zo lang en ik was 8 weken zwanger. Met 18 weken konden we een vruchtwaterpunctie doen. Tot die tijd was het afwachten. Het was loodwaar en afschuwelijk. Waar had ik dit virus opgelopen? Waarschijnlijk in het #zwembad. Meerdere bronnen/richtlijnen verder blijkt dat er van alles aan bacteriën en virussen in het zwembad rondzwerft. Wanneer een zwembad niet heel goed wordt schoongemaakt zwemt daar ook CMV. Denk maar eens aan die zwemluiers, alle urine gaat er doorheen. Het pierenbadje zit vol met bacteriën en virussen. En toch gaan zwangeren nog lekker naar zwangerschapszwemmen. Of naar een vakantiepark met hun peutertje en spetteren ze daar dagelijks. Een Belgisch ziekenhuis adviseert zelfs om niet samen in bad te gaan met je kind als je zwanger bent. En toen trof ik een zwangere bij mij op de praktijk: net griep gehad na een vakantie. Het zwembad was prachtig. Twee weken later: positief. We gaan afwachten hoe dit afloopt, maar ik hou mijn hart vast.

About 1 in 200 babies (0.5%) are born with congenital CMV in the U.S., making it the most common infectious cause of birth defects (information from childrenshospital.org) At 22 weeks, the first question we were asked before we knew any other information or had an updated ultrasound to see what was going on: “Have you thought about termination?” Her response back when she realized we were so taken back by the question was that legally in CT, you can only abort until the 24th week, and she wanted to essentially save us the “hassle” of needing to go to another state who terminates up until later on in the pregnancy if we decided to change our minds… 🤯 I wish this was something we had been warned about and or taught growing up CMV, Cytomegalovirus, often looks like a mild cold, but when it’s contracted before birth, the impact can be life-changing for the baby ✔️ 1 in 200 babies are born with congenital CMV ✔️ 1 in 5 may face long-term challenges like hearing loss or developmental delays What’s hard to process is how preventable some exposure can be with simple awareness and education! This post isn’t about blame, it’s about information. It’s about parents being empowered before it’s too late. For the pregnant mummas in their first trimester with toddlers in daycare (or mixing with other kids) — this one’s for you 💛 I’m not here to freak you out, but I want to share something important to be aware of: CMV (Cytomegalovirus). It’s really common in little kids, especially in daycare. Most of the time, it shows no symptoms — maybe just a mild cold at most. But if you catch CMV for the first time during pregnancy (especially early on), it can pass to your baby and potentially cause serious long-term effects like hearing loss or developmental delays. CMV spreads mostly through saliva and urine, so little things like: 👉🏻 Sharing cutlery or drink bottles with your toddler 👉🏻 Kissing on the lips 👉🏻 Wiping noses without washing hands immediately after can all pass it on. Around 50–85% of adults have had CMV before (often without knowing). So the chance of catching it for the first time during pregnancy—and passing it to your baby—is low. Still, taking some simple precautions isn’t a bad idea!
