AVPilots from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have recently been conducting test flights of China’s COMAC C919 airliner in Shanghai. The South China Morning Post reports that these flights are part of COMAC’s push to obtain certification from Western regulators and gain access to international markets. EASA confirmed to Reuters that the tests are part of its standard “validation activities.”
COMAC, China’s state-owned aircraft manufacturer, launched the C919 program in 2008 with the goal of competing directly with the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. So far, however, the aircraft remains restricted to the Chinese domestic market because it lacks certification from major Western authorities like EASA and the FAA. It received its Chinese type certificate in September 2022 and entered commercial service with China Eastern Airlines the following year.
The company first applied for EASA certification in 2019, but the process was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was restarted in 2023, and in 2025 EASA indicated that full certification could still take three to six years.

CGChina raised its global aerospace presence with a flying display by its C919 jetliner in Dubai, as Chinese planemaker COMAC pursues a place in a market beset by delivery delays at Boeing and Airbus.
China's first fully-fledged domestic jetliner, in a white livery with blue and green details, displayed its belly-painted C919 logo to dignitaries at the Dubai Airshow. CGTN’S Nadia Swan toured both economy and first class and even got into the cockpit.

TEChina’s leader Xi Jinping calls the COMAC C919 jet “the dream of a nation.” And it symbolizes China’s determination to achieve self-reliance in every aspect of advanced technology. The domestically-made narrow body passenger plane was designed to compete with two popular rivals, the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. Together those two western corporations control about 90 percent of the global aircraft market.
With growing demand from airlines, and Boeing’s recent safety issues, most notably involving their 737 Max, China is determined to offer an alternative. And ultimately smash the Airbus-Boeing duopoly.
But there’s no shortage of turbulence ahead for the C919. Despite being assembled in China, it relies on parts made elsewhere. The US also named COMAC as a company "owned or controlled" by the People's Liberation Army.
And the C919 also lacks certifications from aviation regulators in the US and Europe.
