BRI wish I’d known this while studying for the CPA:
1. Build a Realistic weekly schedule
* Before you begin studying, nail down all of your must do’s and then work study in around them. Family, work, and obligations can overshadow studying, build a consistent schedule and stick to it. Obviously leave some flexibility in there, life happens.
2. This is YOUR journey, not a race
* Whether you have just graduated or are starting later in life, remember that it is your journey, not anyone else’s. I fell into the trap of comparison and measuring my progress amongst my peers. It led to a lot of unnecessary pressure and guilt that didn’t make studying any easier. Remember to take it at your own pace and what works best for you and your family.
3. Focus on consistency, not intensity
* 1-2 hour bursts throughout the week can be more impactful that an 8 hour cram session.
4. Stay consistent, but know your boundaries
* Adhere to your weekly schedule and set clear boundaries with outside obligations. Receiving invites to go out? Say yes when you can maintain your study schedule so you don’t get behind. Don’t fall into pressure and let your studying take the back seat.
5. Design the ideal environment
* This one is slept on. Learn what your testing facility environment is like and try to replicate it. Creating a familiar environment will help lessen any test anxiety.
6. Diversify learning
* Flash cards, instruction videos, test banks, utilize methods outside of reading.
7. Understand, not memorize
* Acing the practice tests, but still don’t know bond premium amortization? Seek to understand the topics as you won’t forget it under pressure.
8. Celebrate progress
* Let the small wins carry you to the big victories. Aced a practice section quiz? Ride that feeling as you prepare for each exam.
