LAThe results are in…
Canadian artists: we cannot deny how incredibly fortunate we are to have access to myriad funding sources across the country. That said, what do we do when the funding doesn’t come through? Our American counterparts have to stay active and solvent, most of them without any external funding whatsoever.
As a longtime beneficiary I still believe our system here is enormously helpful. But the question remains: What can we do to keep the arts going and our careers flowing when funds hoped for and perhaps even anticipated don’t come through?
We can’t stop creating.
There are valuable lessons we can learn from our fellow Canadian artists who’ve had to navigate rejections and press onwards (as I have). I think it’s also an opportunity to reconsider new and creative ways to stay vital in our work and in our vision when the going gets tough.
This is how we build resilience.
