Stop picking random products for your PM case study 📱 Here’s how to pick the RIGHT one. THE MISTAKE: People pick Netflix or Spotify because everyone else does. Then their case study sounds generic. Surface-level. Recruiters can tell. HOW TO CHOOSE: 1. Pick Products You Actually USE Daily if possible. You’ll have REAL insights. You know the pain points. You’ve experienced the frustrations. Not “I think users want X” but “I use this daily and here’s what’s broken.” 2. Pick Products with OBVIOUS Problems Don’t choose perfectly polished products. It’s harder to critique something already great. Your analysis will be shallow. Choose products where you think: “Why don’t they fix this?” 3. Pick Products in Industries You UNDERSTAND Use your domain knowledge. Healthcare background? Analyze a health app. Finance experience? Pick fintech. E-commerce? Shopping platform. You’ll have credibility others won’t. 4. Avoid What Everyone Picks If 100 people analyze the same product, yours needs to be EXCEPTIONAL. Better: lesser-known product with unique insights. GOOD CHOICES: ✅ Apps you use at work ✅ Products in your industry ✅ Apps friends complain about ✅ B2B tools (less saturated) ✅ Products with problems you experienced BAD CHOICES: ❌ Products you never used ❌ Overly polished apps ❌ What everyone analyzes (Netflix, Instagram) ❌ Outside your knowledge ❌ Downloaded just to analyze THE TEST: Before committing: ∙ Used this 10+ times? ∙ Can list 3+ specific problems? ∙ Understand who uses it and why? ∙ Can explain business model? ∙ Have opinion on what should change? Can’t answer? Pick different product. REAL EXAMPLE: Bad: “Analyzing Instagram” Why? Never worked in social, don’t understand creator economy, everyone already analyzed it. Good: “Analyzing Asana - I use it daily at work, know where it breaks down, understand project management workflows” THE RESULT: Right product = case study writes itself. Specific insights, not generic. You sound credible. Pick a product you actually know.
