Bruce McCandless II performed the first ever untethered spacewalk on 7th February 1984. Using the Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU), he veered around 100 metres away from Space Shuttle Challenger. The MMU used nitrogen gas propulsion to control the thrust and orientation of the astronaut. The photos, taken by astronaut Robert L. Stewart aboard the shuttle, capture the vastness and solitude of space. McCandless is depicted floating small and alone against the curve of Earth and the darkness of space beyond. #space #nasa #spaceshuttle #iss #earth

170 miles above Earth during NASA’s STS‑41B mission aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, Navy Captain Bruce McCandless II made history on February 7, 1984, as the first person to perform a completely untethered spacewalk. Leaving the shuttle’s cargo bay, McCandless soared free in the vacuum of space using a nitrogen‑propelled Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) — a backpack‑style propulsion system controlled by hand‑grips that allowed him to travel dozens of meters away from the spacecraft without any safety tether attached. His fellow crew photographed him against the backdrop of Earth, capturing one of the most iconic images of human spaceflight. This groundbreaking extravehicular activity (EVA) was part of the effort to test new technologies that could enable astronauts to move independently in space and practice procedures for future satellite retrieval and repair missions. McCandless ventured as far as nearly 100 meters (about 320 feet) from Challenger before safely returning. #BruceMcCandless #UntetheredSpacewalk #STS41B #MMU #NASA 🚀

Riparare l'impossibile a 28.000 km/h.

In 1984, #astronaut Bruce McCandless II made #history by becoming the #first human to #float freely in #space without a tether. Using a Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) — a jet-powered backpack that fired bursts of nitrogen gas — McCandless drifted nearly 100 meters away from the Space Shuttle, farther than any human had ever gone without being physically connected to a spacecraft. This historic moment happened during Space Shuttle mission STS-41B, alongside fellow astronaut Robert Stewart, marking the world’s first untethered spacewalk. The MMU, although heavy on Earth, became weightless in orbit — allowing astronauts to fly freely like satellites in human form. It was later replaced by the SAFER safety propulsion unit used today. This image captures one of the most iconic moments in human space exploration — a human, alone, floating between Earth and the stars. 🌍✨ 📸 Image Credit: NASA — Mission STS-41B

For 30 years, NASA’s Space Shuttle program carried astronauts, deployed satellites, repaired the Hubble Space Telescope, and helped assemble the International Space Station. This isn't a movie—it’s 1984. 👨‍🚀 That tiny speck is Bruce McCandless II. He is floating 320 feet away from his ship. No tether. No safety line. No backup. Just 24 small nitrogen thrusters. One wrong move meant drifting into eternity. The Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) he wore allowed him to navigate the vacuum of space using two hand controllers on his armrests. He was moving at 5 miles per second, yet felt like he was standing perfectly still. NASA retired the MMU after just 3 missions. They decided the risk of a "runaway" astronaut was simply too high for modern spaceflight. Now, all spacewalkers stay firmly attached to the ISS by steel cables and robotic arms. Save this if you love learning things like this. Share this with someone who would find this fascinating. If your jetpack failed right here, what’s your first thought? 👇 . . . . . . #Astronaut #Spacewalk #BruceMcCandless #STS41B #SpaceShuttle Challenger Aerospace RocketScience ZeroGravity Astrobiology SpaceGeek AstroPhotography SpaceHistory SciComm NASAHistory OrbitalMechanics SpaceLovers Cosmology PhysicsLovers EngineeringMarvels SpaceExploration NASA Astronomy ScienceFacts SpacePhotography HistoryInTheMaking Cosmos Universe Physics Stargazing
