The Chicago Defender started in 1904. This wasn't just a newspaper. It was the survival guide for the Great Migration. It told Black families where to go. Which routes were safe. What to wear when they arrived North so they wouldn't be marked as targets. The South didn't want Black people reading it. So Pullman porters smuggled copies on trains. Risked their jobs and worse... to get information to communities the system wanted to keep in the dark. When the founding family sold the paper in 2007, archivists went in expecting 10,000 images. They found 250,000. A quarter million photographs of Black life. Black success. Black history. Sitting in one room. And when they searched for any of it online? Nothing. Because no one was digitizing Black newspapers. No one built platforms for Black photojournalists. The internet wasn't magic. Someone had to upload the history. And for decades, they didn't. You searched for it and couldn't find it. Now you know why. The real origin of Colored People’s Time goes deeper than just “running late.” 📜 Back in 1914, The Chicago Defender published a race-manners column describing how African Americans sometimes unconsciously, sometimes intentionally, operated on their own rhythm of gathering, rather than strict clock time. 📚 Over the decades, “Colored People’s Time” became a lighthearted yet loaded phrase, a mix of cultural pride, stereotype, and subtle resistance. 📰 Historian Ronald Walcott, writing in Black World Magazine (1972), noted: “Colored People’s Time is spoken… in tones of profound dismay (by Blacks who lament their brothers’ ‘irresponsibility’) … or amused tolerance (by the rest of us so accustomed to it we hardly notice).” 🔥 Beneath the jokes was a quiet rebellion — “an effort to evade, frustrate, and ridicule the strict punctuality that serves a cold, impersonal technological society.” In other words, Colored People’s Time has always been more than a punchline, it’s about history, culture, and reclaiming the pace of life. Aye, I quickly wanted to make y’all aware of a new interview that I did with @authentically_arika for the ICONIC, LEGENDARY and HIGHLY RESPECTED online newspaper @chicagodefender! The interview came out TODAY, and I would really appreciate it if y’all would take a moment to check it out whenever y’all get a free chance at some point today. I gotta say that it was an ABSOLUTE HONOR to sit down with Arika for an interview with The Chicago Defender. Listen, y’all have no idea what this interview means to me personally. My family and I have supported this local Black newspaper since the time when my grandparents first migrated up here to Chicago from Atlanta during the days of The Great Migration from the Jim Crow South. The Chicago Defender has ALWAYS served as an advocate, DEFENDER and strong voice on behalf of the Black community here in the city of Chicago. Back in the day, The Chicago Defender was actually the only newspaper that my grandmother would care to read. She used to have them stacked up next to her sitting chair in the living room while she “watched her stories”. Lol THATS what the @chicagodefender means to ME, and the other members of the Black community here in Chicago. That’s one of the many reasons why I’m SO PROUD to have an exclusive interview in @chicagodefender that came out ONLINE TODAY titled “Son Of The Chi”.
