Faith groups are holding weekly vigils outside the Everglades detention camp and other detention centers across the state. Florida residents are using their voice to speak out at city council meetings and urging elected officials to stop putting our neighbors in cages. Through advocacy and organizing, the Deep South is leading the way to hold elected officials accountable and shutdown detention centers.

There have been at least 25 deaths in ICE custody since Trump’s inauguration, making it the deadliest year in ICE custody in decades. In addition to the 25 confirmed ICE custody deaths, we honor the life lost in the fatal shooting of Silverio Villegas González, a 38-year-old father from Chicago, killed by an ICE agent during an immigration sweep after dropping his children off at a school.
Deaths in ICE custody are not isolated tragedies. They reflect a detention system exacerbated by explosive expansion, aggressive targeting of communities, and inherently inhumane conditions, including abuse and medical neglect, enabled by a culture of secrecy and a lack of accountability.
As communities across the country light candles and lay out ofrendas, altars adorned with photos, candles, and offerings to honor loved ones who passed, we mourn the loss of life in ICE custody, valued loved ones, who should have returned to their families alive.
📣DWN’s national Day of the Dead actions are a part of the Disappeared in America Weekend of Action that brings together a broad national coalition – including the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), Detention Watch Network, The Workers Circle, Public Citizen, Women’s March, Strategic Organizing Initiative, and many others – for a weekend of coordinated protests, vigils, and cultural actions. Together, we are sending a clear message that freedom and justice for all people should be the central pillar of a healthy democracy. And that means ending immigration detention once and for all.

IMLet's call it what it is: ICE prison, not detention. “They call it civil detention as a way to differentiate it from incarceration,” shared ImmDef Staff Attorney Tracy Crowley with @KPBS. “But I worked as a criminal defense attorney for years. It’s no different."
At Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego, CA. overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and inhumane treatment are worsening and it's a trend seen nationwide. Our clients have told their attorneys about how they are forced to sleep on the floor and suffer from poor nutrition and insufficient medical support.
“It feels really bad, in a way, to leave knowing that my clients can’t leave,” Tracy said.

PA@potus @vp @whitehouse Pennsylvania says, “Shut Down Moshannon, Elizabeth, Clinton, Pike.” You must dismantle as much of the deportation machine possible before Trump’s inauguration!
1. lift the June executive order that closes the border and prosecutes asylum seekers through the Department of Justice without appointments,
2. repurpose unused green cards,
3. enforce that the Department of Homeland Security to utilize prosecutorial discretion on cancel pending deportation cases,
4. use Presidential pardoning power to protect vulnerable immigrants and
5. end ALL ICE contracts to close detention centers and release people in detention.
The Trump administration plans to implement immigration goals laid out in Project 2025, which include denaturalizing immigrant citizens, ending birthright citizenship, expanding immigrant detention and deputizing local law enforcement and the military in order to execute mass raids and deportations.
DO NOT make the mistakes of the past, DO NOT hand over an expanded detention and deportation system to the next administration.
