This #FieldTripFriday, Secretary Patterson and DNREC staff joined our Coastal Waterbird Biologist Kat Christie, British ornithologist Nigel Clark and volunteers at Slaughter Beach to catch and band ruddy turnstones and other shorebirds during their stopover in Delaware.   These shorebirds are part of a hemisphere-length migration, and our work helps track their health, weight gain and movement as they fuel up on horseshoe crab eggs before heading north.   After banding and collecting data, each bird is carefully released to continue its journey.   ❄️ Next stop: The Arctic to lay their eggs. A large debris pile caught fire and has lasted for several days at a soon-to-be construction site on Clendaniel Pond Road. The fire began when trees, brush, and other materials cleared for the new Cypress Estates housing development were pushed into piles. One of those piles built up enough heat to ignite and has been smoldering since.
