It’s a journey full of ups and downs and we still have a long way to go - but look how far we’ve come! 20 WEEKS PEOPLE!! It may seem impossible, but trust the process. Be patient. One day you’ll wake up and start to see all your hard work finally start to pay off! Some of the biggest game-changers in our training have been: 🐶 Teaching a super strong heel 🐶 Heavily rewarding eye contact (developing attention) 🐶 Teaching Winnie to look to my eyes rather than at my hands 🐶 Playing the engage-disengage game in a variety of environments 🐶 Finding her threshold and giving her the opportunity to succeed 🐶 Sufficiently exercising her (2-3 hours per day for working breeds!) 🐶 Making time to work on all these things DAILY Check out the training highlight for more info 😊 Follow @winniethecattledog for more posts like these, and join our Facebook group for more training advice and support! ⚠️ Shouting at your dog to stop barking—using phrases like “No!” “Shut up!” or “Quiet!”—might feel like the right thing to do, but it’s actually one of the worst ways to handle barking. Here’s why: 1️⃣ Dogs Don’t Speak “Human.” When you yell words like “No!” or “Quiet!” your dog doesn’t understand what you mean. They might interpret your shouting as you joining in on the barking or as a source of stress. 2️⃣ Barking Is Communication. Your dog is barking for a reason—whether it’s excitement, fear, boredom, or frustration. Shouting doesn’t address the root cause and often leaves them confused or more anxious. 3️⃣ Yelling Escalates the Situation. Your loud voice can increase their stress or excitement levels. If they’re barking from fear or alertness, shouting can make them feel even more unsafe and it creates even more frustration in the situation. 4️⃣ It Breaks Trust. Yelling “No!” or “Shut up!” at your dog doesn’t teach them anything constructive. Instead, it can damage the bond between you two, especially if they’re barking because they feel scared or unsure. 👉 Instead: ➡️ Figure out the trigger. Ask yourself: Is your dog barking at a stranger, out of boredom, or to alert you to something? Understanding why they bark is key to resolving it. ➡️ Teach an alternative behaviour. Train cues like “quiet” or “go to place” using positive reinforcement. Reward your dog when they stop barking. ➡️ Redirect their focus. Distract them with a toy, treat, or game to help them shift their attention away from the trigger. ➡️ Enrich their environment. Provide mental and physical stimulation to reduce boredom barking. For fear-based barking, work on building their confidence around triggers through desensitization and counter-conditioning. 🐾 Barking is natural, but excessive barking signals an unmet need or emotion. ⚠️ this could also mean unmet medical needs. Instead of yelling, be patient, find the reason then start management and training. ❗️Comment ‘reactivity’ below for my FREE reactivity training guide 💬 #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogreactivity #reactivity #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingadvice

This is exactly how reactivity starts. We took Reggie, an 18-month-old German Shepherd, out with his owners to assess his behaviour. ➡️ We hadn’t even made it 30 seconds down the road… and BOOM, a dog appears. Instant panic. The lead tightens. They try to hide. Reggie’s frustration builds. And then, the explosion. Barking. Lunging. Chaos. 💥 But here’s the truth: Most reactive dogs aren’t aggressive… they’re overloaded. And most owners don’t need a miracle, they need structure. Avoidance only makes it worse. The more you hide from triggers, the less your dog learns how to cope with them. Reggie’s now with me on residential, and we’re rebuilding everything from the ground up: ✔️ Calm focus around dogs ✔️ Lead control with purpose ✔️ Confidence for both handler and dog This is the kind of transformation that actually sticks. 🔗 Book your £20 assessment today — link in bio 📍 Based in Sheffield | DM for info #AllianceK9 #ReactiveDog #GermanShepherdTraining #DogReactivity #DogBehaviourist #DogTrainerUK #ObedienceTraining #ResidentialDogTraining #StructuredWalks #BalancedTraining

Step one to handling reactivity is figuring out WHY your dog is reacting. These are two of the most common reasons, but there’s other things like lack of obedience, boredom/lack of stimulation, genetics, etc. We have a ton of info in our online community if you want to learn more about dog reactivity and how to address it with your dog! #reactivity #dogtrainer #dogtraining #dogreactivity #dogclass #balanceddogtraining

Part 1: When I got Sultan I was so excited to be able to shape him into the perfect dog. I did all the research I could in the limited amount of time that I had. I worked hard to socialize him properly, fearing that dreaded word “reactivity.” A week and a half before this clip he loved hiking care-free. He was friendly or neutral to dogs that we passed. He was perfect and brave. After being rushed at a trailhead by a neighborhood free range dog, he was never the same. The next few days he showed me he was afraid of the woods. He was even more afraid of the people and dogs in them. I thought it was a fluke. I didn’t believe him. It took me a week and a half to realize that my fearless puppy was no more. He had become what I had feared the most. I cried in the bathroom because I didn’t want him to see. I didn’t want him to know my disappointment, because it was not with him. He was still my perfect puppy, but I knew I had a lot more research and work to do. A reactive dog is not a bad dog. They are scared and having big feelings. It is our job to help them navigate their environment and their emotions. It is up to us to help them feel calm. This community has helped me the most to not feel like a failure. And I thank you so much for that 💚 If you’re struggling with your relationship because your dog is reactive, you don’t need to be embarrassed. I’m always here to talk, feel free to reach out. 💌 #dog #lovedogs #reactivedog #dogreactivity #reactive #reactivity #realtalk #dogmom #dogtraining

you live & you learn lol Don’t get me wrong, some dogs LOVE the dog park (Winnie included) and they can be great fun when you know the other dogs and the owners are responsible! However, the cons often far outweigh the pros: 🐶 Some dogs just don’t get along - your dog or other dogs may be dog selective and dislike specific breeds, sizes, snout shapes, colour, or how they act (overly excited, stiff/intense) 🐶 Your dog can pick up bad habits from others dogs - barking along the fence, barking excessively at other dogs playing, “rude” behaviours like being too intense, not respecting a dogs personal space, playing rough etc. 🐶 Dog parks make it difficult for people to regain control or correct their dog if they are not in close proximity There are tons of great alternatives to socialise your dog! Parallel or pack walks in a neutral environment, going and hanging out in leashed dog-friendly areas (e.g. coffee shop), play dates with another well-behaved pup and responsible owner - all fantastic options that can teach your dog how to be neutral in proximity to other dogs! ☺️ After several seemingly random attacks in dog parks, Winnie quickly developed severe leash reactivity and dog selectivity. It’s been a huge process to get her to where she is now, but all our hard work is paying off! 🥰 We’ve stopped going to dog parks almost altogether for the past 6 months, instead opting for other activities and methods of socialisation. Thankfully, Winnie’s reactions are getting rarer and rarer to come by these days 🥳 check out our reactivity highlight if you want to watch our journey and see what training tactics we implemented! #dogparks #dogsocialisation #dogreactivity #reactivedog #propersocialization #socialisingresponsibly #dogsofaustralia

Let’s take a look at Lyla, a reactive dog who I am helping via Zoom behavior consultations. She’s a friendly dog but she was becoming increasingly leash reactive. When we work with dogs who are barking and lunging and explosive when they see other dogs, we use very simple techniques. Rewarding the dog for looking at the trigger is our number one tool. And we never “correct” the dog for acting in an emotional way! Stay tuned for more tips featuring Lyla! #reactivedog #dogreactivity #anxiousdog #doganxiety #dogsofinstagram #dogbehaviorspecialist

Would you have handled this differently? Why do you think he reacted this way? He was standing near both owners just before he lunged at me when I went to grab the leash. He also has a history of resource guarding bones, chews and other objects. I’m going to post a video tomorrow and show you what I did and what I believe is the cause of his reaction. #dogaggression #dogreactivity #resourceguarding #dogbehavior #balanceddogtraining
