All of this was made possible because of you, and we are deeply grateful. This was the first step of our Back to Education campaign - a 1st goal we successfully reached thanks to your generosity. The next steps are to rebuild the three schools, support the teaching staff and open a daily school canteen so that every child can receive at least one meal a day. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s national football team protested the armed violence and massacre happening in the country before their semifinal match at the Africa Cup. DRC players covered their mouth and put two fingers to their temple while singing the national anthem before the match against Ivory Coast on Wednesday, Feb. 7. The team, nicknamed the Leopards, also wore black armbands to the match. For decades, more than 100 military groups have been fighting for territory and natural resources in eastern DRC, which has forced more than 6.5 million people from their homes and killed another six million. The resurgence of a military group, M23, in late 2021 has led to a spike in violence that has displaced millions more and worsened the humanitarian crisis in the area. The DRC team’s French coach, Sébastien Desabre, who also joined in the protest, said in a press conference following the match that the players wanted to bring attention to the crisis happening in their country. “A national football team is a driving force for a nation. And this evening, it was also our duty to be able to inform what is happening behind the scenes,” Desabre said, according to the Washington Post. “Everyone sees the massacres in Eastern Congo. But everyone is silent,” player Cédric Bakambu wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday prior to the match. “Put the same energy that you use talking about the Africa Cup to highlight what is happening with us. There are no small gestures.” The team’s captain, Chancel Mbemba, also took to X on Monday, writing “Thinking of all the all the victims of the atrocities in Goma and their families. This can be done in many ways (the main one being - TALKING about mental health). This can include - 1) Education and awareness: This involves learning about the history and cultural context of the trauma, as well as understanding the psychological and physical effects of it on individuals and communities. 2) Healing and therapy: Healing and therapy can help individuals and families to process and heal from the trauma they have experienced. You can DM us to be connected to a therapist. 3) Social support - This can involve creating safe spaces for people to share their experiences, building supportive networks, and engaging in cultural practices that promote healing and resilience. 4) Addressing systemic issues: Addressing systemic issues that contribute to intergenerational trauma, such as poverty, inequality, and discrimination, is also important. Whenever people have asked me what the DR Congo is like, the first thing I say is, “it’s such a beautiful place…” the scenery, landscapes, greenery - it’s truly a blessed land. It’s so vast as well, eastern Congo, where we were is so different to the western region, where the capital Kinshasa is. However, one night, while having dinner on a terrace, we heard gunshots, in a panic most people got up, looked around worryingly, wondering whether we should flee to our hotel rooms - it was a reminder of the ongoing conflict over its mineral-rich land that’s ruining the lives of millions. DR Congo is so so blessed and in theory should be one of if not the richest country in the world, thanks to its unending supply of cobalt, gold, diamonds, uranium etc, but it remains one of the poor thanks to corruption, greed, war and to put it plainly, the lack of fairness and justice in the world. Like we say in Nigeria, “this life no balance”. Yet I would love to go back. #VivaCongo 🇨🇩 #africa #war #conflict #congo
