In a stunning upset that sent shockwaves through Palm Beach County, Democrat Emily Gregory pulled off a dramatic flip on March 24, 2026, seizing Florida State House District 87 right in President Donald Trump’s backyard. Oh wow, how utterly shocking. The district, home to his lavish Mara largo estate, had been a solid Republican stronghold until Gregory edged out Trump endorsed rival Jon Maples by a razor thin 2.4 percentage points, or roughly 797 votes out of more than 33,000 cast. Truly a nail biter for the ages. The seat opened after longtime Republican Mike Caruso resigned to take over as Palm Beach County clerk, leaving a district Trump had carried by double digits in 2024 suddenly up for grabs. Brilliant timing, as always. Trump threw his full weight behind Maples just the day before, blasting out a fiery endorsement on social media and rallying all great patriots in the area to storm the polls for his pick. Even the president himself voted by mail in the race despite his long standing attacks on the practice. How convenient. Gregory, a fiery first time candidate and owner of a fitness company helping pregnant and postpartum women, campaigned hard on skyrocketing costs and everyday family struggles. Her narrow victory turned the once red seat blue, handing Trump a symbolic black eye as Democrats cheered it as proof that even Mara largo’s neighbors are fed up. Because nothing says “fed up” like a squeaker in a special election with pathetic turnout. That same night, Democrats notched another tight win in a separate Tampa area state Senate special election. As always with these low turnout specials, the results highlight local gripes more than a sweeping national wave but the drama of a Trump turf loss lit up headlines anyway.
