This week is Amniotic Fluid Embolism Awareness Day.
We are the luckiest of the unlucky.
“I’ll take those odds any day. Crazy things like that only happen to other people. I’m just going to have a baby.”
This is what I would have said had I known Amniotic Fluid Embolism existed before I gave birth. The odds were in my favor. This never should have happened to me, and yet it did.
When you experience a rare complication, every single time someone quotes a rare statistic to you, it feels like a gut punch. We immediately remember when statistics used to comfort us. But, now we are that rare statistic. It did happen to us. We can no longer take solace in the probability. We can no longer feel peace knowing something is unlikely to happen to us. We miss being able to mitigate our fears and anxieties with statistics. Instead, we’ve become the statistic, the anomaly.
When the “rare thing” happens to you or someone you know, its rarity loses all significance. Your peace of mind is forever altered.

THWe spoke with Kayleigh Summers shortly after the devastating loss of Hailey Okula to AFE.
She opened up about what it means to live as an amniotic fluid embolism survivor—while knowing how many women don’t get that chance. AFE is catastrophic and unpredictable. Even with the best possible care, survival rates for AFE are only as high as 60%.
She continues to honor those who aren’t here to share their stories and their grieving families by raising awareness of AFE and advocating for improved preparation and compassionate care in hospital systems.

Amniotic Fluid Embolism is one of the most fatal birth complications in the world.
Published rates of survivability range from 20-60%.
1 in 40,000 families will experience this catastrophic complication in the U.S.
That’s approximately 100 families per year.
Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a sudden and unexpected life-threatening birth complication that can affect both mother and baby. Although poorly understood,It is believed to occur when a mother suffers an allergic-like (immune) response to amniotic fluid and fetal material that enters her bloodstream during labor or shortly after delivery. It is important to note that the entrance of amniotic fluid and fetal material into the bloodstream is a normal part of the birth process and in most women, it does not cause this serious reaction.
Most often an AFE involves two very serious and life-threatening complications; heart and lung failure (cardiorespiratory collapse) and severe bleeding (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy or DIC). Independently, each of these complications is extremely serious and life-threatening. Together, they are exceptionally challenging to treat and require immediate and aggressive medical care.
We know so much more than we did 15 years ago.
But, we still don’t know why this happens. We still don’t know who it will happen to.
We still have so much more work to do.

I think this one resonated because it’s such a clear visual for the impact of birth trauma. It’s a window into exactly what my husband was experiencing at the time our son was born. It’s a window into the realities of partner trauma.
This is a video taken 5 days after my AFE and my son’s birth. The full video is of my son’s first hiccups, recorded so that I would have the opportunity to see it.
It happened to catch this exact moment, where you can actually see the trauma written on my husband’s face. This is what I’m talking about when I discuss partner trauma. This is what it looks like to feel helpless as you watch your partner suffer. This is what it looks like to not be able to stop yourself from traveling back to that moment. This is what it looks like to be completely confused as to how this all happened and where it all went wrong.
To all the partners out there, I’m so sorry for what you had to witness and the lack of acknowledgement that likely followed. This is what partner trauma looks like. It deserves space and acknowledgment too. Partners need therapy and support too.
