Hello! Margaret here, I'm the Head of Design at Farmlink! I want to give a huge shout-out to Keith, Javier, and everyone in the farming community. I don't speak Spanish, so while on the lemon farm, I mostly observed and listened. The following is the biggest takeaway I have from this trip: -Farm labor is highly skilled. To say the least, it requires incredible speed, precise technique, along with great mental & physical endurance. -Farm work is hard work. In this scenario, many farmers were there from 6am to 5pm. From going up and down steep hills, risking getting bit by rattle snakes hiding under trees, to constant dust in your face at the sorting station, and withstanding long hours of heat while having to keep all skin covered, farm work takes a toll on your body and has lasting health implications. Farmworkers are the backbone of our food system and they deserve immense amounts of respect. I was lucky enough to spend the day with many incredible people watching, learning, and trying to keep up. We picked and packaged 72,000lbs of lemons in just one day (the whole operation took 4 days). I'm excited to be able to show you this inside look at how much work it took for lemons to get from trees to plates. Next time you're squeezing a lemon, remember the people and faces behind it. 💛

The Mediterranean Lifestyle. One of my most frequently asked questions is where do I source ingredients here in the US. When I first moved here, eight years ago, I made the mistake of disconnecting from the farming community. As you know, if you have visited Italy, we have farmers markets on every corner of town. It’s our lifestyle, we have a big connection to our local growers and we let the seasonal ingredients inspire our weekly menus. It took me a few years before I realized that I could implement this here, even in Florida! There are large communities of farmers and agricultural movements all across the United States. I started googling and researching and to my surprise it was bigger than I thought. I felt a little more at home and ever since I have been getting local produce grown by amazing, loving and passionate farmers who care about food and soil. I was also surprised to find out that a lot of farms provide “organic” ingredients even though they haven’t been recognized as such by official institutions. And sometimes the cost of food is much lower than what I would pay at the grocery stores. My health improved tremendously since doing that. Find your local farms and growers, support the agricultural movements. Choose your ingredients, let it be an inspiration to nurture your loved ones. Nadia x
