If you were a North Sea sailor in the 18th century, you wouldn’t leave Stromness harbour before paying a visit to Bessie Millie - the local weather witch! 🌬️ For the price of a sixpence, Bessie would sell you a bag of fair winds or use her boiling kettle to foretell storms. The treacherous waters of the Pentland Firth kept Bessie Millie in constant business…but local folklore tells of a foolish sailor who tried to wrong foot Bessie one day! We had a wonderful & windy time on the Orkney Islands, documenting and filming folkloric magic for the @ffern.co storytelling residency. I must admit I don’t want buying a perfume to feel like trying to get into oxbridge but at the same time the exclusivity piques one’s interest. They have a store in london where I was able to try- but not necessarily buy- their entire archive. My kitchen doesn’t feel like spring until the scent matches the ingredients on the table. After a morning of foraging I baked and decorated a cake with the flowers I gathered.
