Even under a microscope, the whorls, loops, and ridges of a koala's fingers are so similar to ours that forensic experts could mistake them for human prints. Scientists believe koalas developed fingerprints for the same reason humans did: to grip surfaces. Koalas climb rough-barked trees and grasp eucalyptus leaves with incredible precision, requiring the same frictional grip that our fingerprints provide.
