If you would have asked me five years ago how long I would be doing CrossFit my answer would have been easy—forever. But just as life does, it has a way of changing and you enter into different seasons as you age. Eight years of high intensity workouts 4-5x/week while having two babies, being pregnant with a third and working at the hospital part time. My body was tired. I no longer had the joy, energy or time I once had. The high intensity, fasted workouts, red-lining, and dying on the ground after WODs were all getting to be too much. I even had my labs checked and my cortisol was high. My functional med doctor hinted at CrossFit but at the time I wasn’t ready to accept it. I’m naturally competitive and thinking about walking away from something that filled my competitive drive was hard. In CrossFit you’re surrounded by a community of competitive people all pushing each other to be better. It’s one of the main reasons why I loved it. After workouts I would be exhausted, so much so that I would have to nap when my kids napped exhausted. This can’t be normal I thought. I started seeing a former Crossfitter posting about her programming that had a Crossfit component but that was low intensity. She was in a similar life stage as me and it felt like someone else was feeling how I was. I once lived and breathed CrossFit, but now was in a different stage of life with little humans to chase after. I knew something needed to change. After I finished the 2025 CrossFit Open I decided to try her programming. It’s been almost a whole year and I have not looked back. I will always love CrossFit. It was truly some of the best times of my life and I wouldn’t trade it. I just know that right now in my season of life, it’s not for me. I need to have joy for my kids, energy that lasts the whole day, and a schedule that allows me to be flexible to get a workout in when I can. Adapt, change & be your best at every age! The same workouts won’t work forever.. we need to mix up our fitness style, intensity & goals throughout life. As I edged closer to 40, I made some changes to my workouts… so I could look, feel and move like I was only 30 😉 haha! Now, at 42, I’m feeling stronger and better than in my early 30s! * I STARTED LIFTING HEAVIER. In our thirties, we start to gradually lose muscle mass. Heavier weight-training fights back. Also, definition & muscle keep the body looking tight. * I ELIMINATED STEADY-STATE CARDIO. If you’re not training for a race or event… I highly recommend replacing steady-state cardio for intervals. I also ALWAYS run at an incline. * I ADDED WEEKLY YOGA SESSIONS to increase mobility, core control & balance. Aaaannndd I want to be able to do headstands to impress my kids 😉 * I WORK CORE MORE! Intentional core workouts make all the difference. I used to toss some core at the end of workouts on occasion, but now, I do core-specific workouts at least 3 times a week.
