PRAirbus throttle levers are designed around fixed power positions called detents ✈️⚙️
Instead of moving freely like traditional throttles, Airbus thrust levers “lock” into predefined positions that command specific engine modes through FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) 🧠
Detents
A detent is a physical notch where the lever clicks into place, giving tactile confirmation to the pilot 🔒
The pilot selects the thrust mode — the system automatically manages engine power.
TOGA (Takeoff / Go Around) 🚀
• Maximum available thrust
• Used for takeoff and missed approach
• Provides full rated engine power when required
FLX / MCT ✈️
• FLX (Flexible thrust) reduces takeoff power to protect engine life
• MCT (Max Continuous Thrust) used during engine-out situations
• Optimizes performance while maintaining safety margins
CL (Climb) ⬆️
• Primary in-flight detent
• After takeoff, levers are set to CL
• Autothrust manages climb, cruise, and descent power automatically
IDLE 🌬️
• Minimum thrust setting
• Used during descent and landing phases
How Airbus throttle philosophy works
Once set in CL detent, levers normally remain untouched during flight 🤖
Unlike Boeing, Airbus thrust levers do not move when autothrust adjusts power.
Why detents matter
• Reduces pilot workload
• Prevents overboosting
• Standardizes thrust settings
• Improves engine protection and efficiency

Meanwhile, over in the Airbus cockpit…
💅 I’m sipping my coffee, gently guiding my A350–1000 through turbulence with light sidestick corrections—fingertip flying at its finest.
The sidestick doesn’t block your view of the instruments, doesn’t bruise your knees, and most importantly… doesn’t require a protein shake afterwards.
