AMWelcome back to my Beekeeping journey!
My very first honey harvest… & it didn’t go exactly to plan 🤪
Harvesting from a @flowhive is actually designed to be incredibly simple. When everything is set up correctly, you simply insert the key into the Flow frame, which splits the honeycomb cells inside the frame & allows the honey to flow down through tubes & into your jars without needing to open the hive or disturb the bees.
But I made one small mistake.
The hive wasn’t properly level.
A Flow Hive needs to be slightly tilted backwards so gravity pulls the honey towards the harvest tubes at the back. Because mine wasn’t level, the honey began slowly running forward inside the hive instead of towards the jars, & after about ten minutes I noticed it dripping out near the brood box entrance.
I stopped the harvest immediately.
What was fascinating to watch was how quickly the bees went to work cleaning it up. Bees hate waste. They used their proboscis (their long tongue) to collect the spilled honey & carry it back inside the hive to store again. Within a short time they had already started reclaiming what had been lost.
I also managed to drop over half a jar of honey… which apparently is a fairly common but I almost cried 🙃
The next day we came back more prepared - levelling the hive properly, moving the shelf closer to the jars, & using cling wrap to keep curious bees out while the honey flowed.
The reward was two large jars of honey that were completely different colours & aromas, which likely comes from the variety of nectar our bees forage. We live across the road from a macadamia farm & have a garden full of flowers, so their pantry is pretty diverse.
Even when things don’t go perfectly, it’s all part of learning how incredible these little pollinators really are.

LIIt’s been such an adventure getting into beekeeping this past year! 🐝 I totally get why beekeeping clubs exist—there’s somuch to learn.
