Here’s your checklist for huge tomato plants 🍅 Dig a deep hole-1’ down is not too deep for a mature plant-the trick is burying the first few sets of stems so you get seriously good root structure Be sure your soil is rich with compost-I love a soil mix made of compost, top soil and sand Loosen the roots-this encourages them to start to spread out as soon as they settle in Bury the first few stems-new roots will form from these to create a really strong base for your plant Tie it against a trellis-tomatoes won’t hold themselves up so be sure you tie your plant against an arch, obelisk or panel trellis right away and continue to connect it as it grows each week Join me for a Spring Garden Class this week-comment SPRING and I’ll send you a link to your DMs (Be sure you’re following me so I can send you a message) Good luck with your tomatoes! #vegetablegarden #gardentips #gardening #raisedbeds #tomatoes

📍SAVE THIS POST: What You Can Direct Sow in March 🌱I had to replay this classic video for my Gardeners 💃🏽👩🏾‍🌾 Direct sowing simply means planting seeds straight into the soil where they will grow to maturity. These crops love cooler temperatures and often grow best when they aren’t transplanted. Here’s what gardeners can typically direct sow in March depending on their zone. Zones 8–9 Peas,Carrots,Radishes,Spinach,Lettuce,Arugula,Turnips,Beets,Mustard Greens,Collards,Kale,Swiss Chard,Green Onions,Potatoes,Bok Choy,Tatsoi,Cilantro,Dill Zones 6–7 Peas,Carrots,Radishes,Spinach,Lettuce,Arugula,Turnips,Beets,Mustard Greens,Kale,Collards,Swiss Chard,Green Onions,Potatoes,Cilantro,Dill Zones 3–5 Peas (late March),Spinach,Radishes,Arugula,Lettuce,Kale,Mustard Greens,Green Onions,Dill,Cilantro Always check your soil conditions and local frost dates before planting. Cool season crops thrive in early spring and will reward you before the summer heat arrives. 🌿 .. #gardentips #gardening #spring

Today we are back and I am showing you my journey over the last five years of growing and enjoying fresh basil at home, and the best part is you only need a few cheap plants from the supermarket to get started. Basil is one of my all time favourite herbs, not just for its amazing culinary uses but also as a great companion plant in the garden too. However, unfortunately it is one plant that seems to cause gardeners quite a few issues to grow, but the good news is that’s often not your fault, and is easy to fix! Most basil plants fail because of how they are grown and sold. For the most part you will buy basil in small pots of relatively poor compost, and in these pots you will see 30 or more small basil plants. Each basil plant can grow into its own bush if grown and pruned properly so we need to give them some love. It all starts by gently separating small clusters of basil, and potting them on into larger pots filled with good quality compost. As a side note this is great as you get multiple plants from the one you bought. Then over the spring and summer just keep them watered and in a sunny spot and you will notice they will be so much happier. As they grow instead of picking each leaf, keep harvesting the tips, which will cause the plant to bush out giving you a healthier plant, and more to harvest. Basil is an annual plant so will die off at the end of each year, but you can take a few cuttings, which can be grown on a windowsill over winter and then planted back out the following spring to repeat the process again. Thank you so much for watching, the last few weeks have been tough with everything going on and your support means the world, I love you all, Joe 😊🌱💚🙏 #basil #gardening #gardentips #zerowaste #harvest

If you’re waiting for perfect weather… you’ll be waiting forever. These go straight in the ground now — no trays, no faff: → Agrostemma (quick, airy stems — fills gaps fast) → Lepidium (the easiest filler you’ll ever grow) → Centaurea montana (hardy, early colour when everything else is thinking about it) This is how you build a cut flower patch that actually produces — not one that lives in trays on your bench for 6 weeks. Direct sowing = less work, stronger plants, more flowers. If you’ve never tried it, start here. Binge my grid for more gardening tips 🌱 #gardentips #flowersfromthefarm #cottagegardenflowers

🍅 I love our trusty DIY tomato trellises! Comment TRELLIS and I’ll send you our easy step-by-step guide and video on how to make your own. The tutorial also walks you through how to prune and train tomatoes up a trellis like this. 👍🏼 We’ve been using this system for over 5 years now (it’s like a combination of the Florida weave + single stake method), and I can’t imagine growing any other way now! It’s pretty, tidy, easy to see and harvest fruit, increases airflow = less disease pressure, and leaves plenty of space for tomato companion plants like basil, marigolds, bush beans, and others in the bed 🌼 It’s been so fun to see some of you using this system in your own gardens now too 💚 Wishing you a terrific tomato season! #gardentips #homesteading #growyourown #gardenlife #instagarden
