BEIn March of 2025, I started running after having my second baby. I ran in high school, but hadn’t run in years and couldn’t run a mile without walking.
I signed up for a 10k to set a gos to work towards. Then I signed up for a half marathon. Then another.
From September 2025 to February 2026, I shaved 9 minutes off my half marathon time. Here’s what helped:
• I strength trained during pregnancy. I think this helped me have a solid base level of fitness. I wasn’t starting totally from zero, I just really had to focus on building cardiovascular endurance.
• I listened to my body and started slow. I do run/walk intervals and didn’t push the mileage too quickly.
• I followed a plan. I know people have opinions about @runna but it’s what I used and it has helped me so much with having a plan and sticking to it. It takes the mental work out of planning my runs and it’s affordable in this season of life.
• I started eating more carbs. My son had a grain intolerance (that he has now outgrown), so for the first 9 months pp I wasn’t eating any grains which made it hard to get enough carbs. Ever since upping my carbs, I’ve felt so much faster and stronger.
• I’ve done a mix of speed work, “easy” runs, and long runs, and continued strength trainings 3x a week.
• I respect rest! I listen to my body and make sure to have days of no activity so my body can recover adequately.
• I started taking creatine 6 months ago and I truly feel it has done wonders for my energy, especially after nights of broken sleep.
The first race was also pretty much all downhill and the second one had 604ft of elevation gain, so I am so proud of this progress!
