WIJohn Kiriakou is a former CIA officer and whistleblower best known for publicly confirming the agency’s use of waterboarding during the early years of the U.S. “War on Terror.” He joined the CIA in 1990 and worked as an analyst and operations officer, with assignments focused on counterterrorism. In 2007, during a television interview, Kiriakou became one of the first former intelligence officials to acknowledge that the CIA had used waterboarding on detainees, describing the practice as torture. Although he stated that he personally opposed the program, he was later charged under the Espionage Act for disclosing the identity of a covert officer to a journalist. In 2012, he pleaded guilty to one count and served about two years in prison.
