Have you been to Gunma prefecture? 🇯🇵 Whether it’s your first time to Japan or you’ve been here multiple times, I think you’ll find something charming about Gunma! Some highlights: 🍱 Try local cuisines, this is my favourite thing to do when travelling Japan. You gotta try the classic himokawa udon at @fujiyahonten_gunma or a modern food experience using local ingredients at @shiroiya_the_restaurant! 🛌 Stay in a ryokan: @oterastay.official Kannon-in. It was so much fun to prepare our own futon, chatted all night by the dining area and took lots of photos at the Japanese garden (with snow!!!). If ryokan is not your thing, enjoy a massage chair in your upscale business hotel @cocograndtakasaki_cocociel or experience luxurious art rooms at @shiroiyahotel. ❤️ My favourite part of this trip? Painting my own daruma at @imai_daruma78. I got to learn from an expert and also buy cute daruma for my friends in the souvenir store… ✨ Other highlights: my first strawberry picking experience at @harunohi_sb, train restaurant + onsen by the @watarase.keikoku.railway, and souvenir shopping at @morihide.textile! 💖 I’ve visited Gunma 3x now in 2023, and it’s only the start of March! Haha. Definitely an underrated prefecture. So if you want to find off-the-beaten path spots near Tokyo, save this reel and add this to your Japan itinerary… 📍 @visitgunma

This is Japan’s most unique train station! 😱🚆 Located in Northern Gunma, at the border of Nagano, sits a train station unlike anywhere else in Japan. While quite unassuming from the outside with a single building, it is once you enter where the true nature of this station comes to light. That’s because Doai Station is known as Japan’s deepest train station! And it is veeery deep. In fact, it took me more than 10 minutes to walk from the train platform up. And because it was quite a steep climb, they even set up benches along the way. Nowadays, the station is barely used, especially outside the main skiing season and only really visited by train enthusiasts. If you want to check it out yourself, the best way is to get on a bullet train from Tokyo to Gala-Yuzawa Station, and then get on the local Minakami Line train to Doai Station. Make sure to bring some drinks and snacks and check the train schedules in advance as there’s not many facilities besides a small souvenir shop nearby.
