While childhood marriages were not uncommon among the nobility, as girls could be married as young as 12 and boys as young as 14, it was unusual for them to be consummated before the age of 14.
Although early consummations were not seen as criminal or immoral, they were still discouraged because the health and well-being of the girl were considered to be at risk.
Margaret Beaufort was widowed when she was seven months pregnant, after her husband had been captured by the Yorkists during the Wars of the Roses and died of plague while in captivity.
Afterward, Jasper Tudor, Edmund’s brother, took Margaret and the child under his protection. After Margaret had given birth, Jasper named the boy Owen, honoring his own father.
But Margaret, even as a 13-year-old girl, was neither meek nor meandering. She halted her son’s baptism and commanded the bishop to begin the service again and give her son the name Henry.
It was with her help that her son, Henry VII, would eventually become king of England and begin the Tudor dynasty.
