Hank Mobley’s Another Workout: A Lost Session Worth Every Second Hank Mobley recorded Another Workout on December 5, 1961, for Blue Note Records. Rudy Van Gelder engineered the session at his legendary Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey studio. Blue Note shelved the recording for nearly 24 years, finally releasing it in 1985. The delay is inexplicable — the music is absolutely extraordinary. Mobley leads the date on tenor saxophone with a warm, deeply personal tone. Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums round out the group. All three musicians emerged directly out of the legendary Miles Davis rhythm section. Together they play with a deep, intuitive chemistry that feels genuinely rare. “Gettin’ and Jettin’” is a Mobley original built over a brisk 24-bar G-minor structure. Mobley delivers eight straight solo choruses bursting with invention and dazzling variety. Kelly follows with a bluesy, perfectly shaped piano solo. This track alone makes the entire album worth your devoted attention. “I Should Care” — written by Axel Stordahl, Paul Weston, and Sammy Cahn — showcases Mobley’s ballad artistry beautifully. His tone here is warm, rich, and achingly expressive throughout. Kelly comps with quiet restraint, giving Mobley generous space to breathe and explore. At 7:41, it stands as one of the most moving ballad performances ever recorded. #HankMobley #AnotherWorkout #BlueNoteRecords #HardBop #JazzAlbumReview

Jazz Message #2 — Hank Mobley’s Hard Bop Statement Hank Mobley recorded Jazz Message #2 across two sessions in 1956. Savoy Records released it in early May 1957 under catalog number MG 12092. Rudy Van Gelder engineered both sessions at his studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. The album runs just over 32 minutes and delivers five tightly focused hard bop tracks. Two separate quintets back Mobley throughout the record. The July session featured trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Taylor. Donald Byrd on trumpet, Barry Harris on piano, and Kenny Clarke on drums joined Watkins for the November session. Mobley’s warm tenor saxophone ties both quintets together with unwavering authority. “Space Flight” stands as the album’s most electrifying track, riding on bebop’s rhythm changes. Mobley builds in stop-time passages that briefly freeze the groove before the band snaps back hard. “B. for B.B.” opens the second session with a catchy head and brilliant improvised dialogue between Mobley and Donald Byrd. Barry Harris delivers his finest piano work on the record, his voicings open and perfectly balanced. Jazz Message #2 marks a pivotal moment in Mobley’s artistic development as a composer and leader. He writes three of the five tracks, showing real ambition beyond blowing over standards. Craft Recordings reissued the album in 2025 on 180-gram vinyl, remastered using the original analog tapes. If you love hard bop, this record belongs in your collection — put it on tonight and hear why Mobley still matters. #HankMobley #JazzMessage2 HardBop SavoyRecords JazzVinyl

Hank Mobley Quartet: A Hard Bop Debut That Still Demands Your Attention In March 1955, Hank Mobley walked into a studio and announced himself. Blue Note Records released Hank Mobley Quartet as catalog number BLP 5066. Five of the six tracks are original Mobley compositions — a bold creative declaration. The album pulses with blues-rooted energy and deeply personal expression. Rudy Van Gelder engineered the session on March 27, 1955, in Hackensack, New Jersey. Alfred Lion produced the date for Blue Note with his characteristic, artist-first vision. The quartet featured Horace Silver on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. All three were Jazz Messengers veterans who brought hard-earned collective chemistry to this recording. “Hank’s Prank” opens the album with sharp rhythmic energy and surprising phrase placements. Art Blakey drives the track with crackling, relentless forward momentum. Mobley’s solo lines snap and dart with focused, precise intelligence. Horace Silver comps with spare, blues-tinged chords, leaving Mobley plenty of room to breathe. “Love for Sale,” Cole Porter’s 1930 standard, receives the full hard bop treatment here. Mobley’s entrance is immediately arresting — deliberate, full-toned, and slightly behind the beat. He transforms Porter’s sophisticated harmony into a vehicle for his own blues-soaked lyricism. Silver’s piano weaves clean, elegant lines through the changes with particular grace. #HankMobley #BlueNoteRecords #HardBop #JazzClassics #JazzHistory

🎹 Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers | Blue Note, 1956 Some albums don’t just play — they talk to you. Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers is one of those records. Recorded in 1954 and 1955 at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, it dropped on Blue Note Records in July 1956. Engineer Rudy Van Gelder gave it a warm, punchy mono sound that still rattles your speakers today. Horace Silver wrote nearly every tune on this album. He brought together trumpeter Kenny Dorham, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, bassist Doug Watkins, and the thunderous Art Blakey on drums. These five musicians locked into a groove that changed jazz permanently. Silver himself called it the greatest band he ever played with. “The Preacher” nearly didn’t make the album — producer Alfred Lion thought it sounded too old-fashioned. Silver borrowed deep from gospel and barroom blues to write that irresistible melody. Dorham and Mobley deliver it with the warmth of a Sunday congregation. Lion backed down, and jazz got one of its most beloved songs. “Doodlin’” became Silver’s first single before the LP even existed. Its looping, catchy melody is pure hard bop swagger — simple, soulful, and impossible to forget. Mobley’s tenor solo glides through the changes with easy grace. Miles Davis reportedly heard it live and was immediately struck by its power. Please send this to a fellow jazz head. 🎷 #HoraceSilver #HardBop #BlueNoteRecords #JazzMessengers #JazzHistory
