JEHe wasn’t just beaten…
His back was torn open, flesh ripped apart…
Every strike carried unbearable pain… every wound spoke love…
Jesus Christ endured this before the cross — not because He had to… but because He chose to, for us.
Before crucifixion, He was subjected to Roman scourging — one of the most brutal punishments of that time. The Romans used a whip called a flagrum, designed with multiple leather thongs, each embedded with sharp pieces of bone, metal, or lead.
With every lash, the whip would dig into the skin and tear it open as it was pulled back. It didn’t just bruise the body — it ripped the flesh, exposing muscles, and in severe cases even deeper tissues. Many victims didn’t survive this punishment alone because of extreme blood loss and shock.
The Bible records this moment:
“Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.” — John 19:1
And it was already foretold:
“But He was wounded for our transgressions… by His wounds we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:5
This is the suffering He went through…
not out of weakness, but out of love.
