Want to lower your #cholesterol without medications? Diet & exercise are key! My general practice is to risk stratify patients according to their personal and family medical histories and tests like coronary calcium score to better counsel them and allow a timed trial of lifestyle interventions to see if we can get their cholesterol into a good range without medications. A reminder: ALL SUBSTANCES COME WITH RISK, including those that are considered natural. That being said - there are going to be some groups of people, such as those who have familial hypercholesteremia, diabetes, or already have heart disease, for whom meds might be necessary. There are also plenty of people for whom high cholesterol is genetic- you could be doing everything “right” and still need intervention! Again - I want to push against the feeling that health is a virtue and that people “earn” illness. In a society like ours, in which caring for yourself is arduous work, it’s more of a privilege. My goal is tell help arm you with knowledge to best take care of yourself! #hearthealth I’ve asked this question before, but do you know what your #ldl is?

Simple Test to assess your health risk. Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is considered a better biomarker than Body Mass Index (BMI) for health because it provides a more accurate measure of overall health risk. Studies have shown that WHtR is a better predictor of cardiovascular disease risk, diabetes risk and mortality than BMI because Abdominal fat affects organs like the heart, liver and kidneys more adversely in terms of metabolic disorders than fat around the hips and bottom. In a comprehensive study by Lee et al. that revised 10 studies, BMI was the poorest discriminator for cardiovascular risk factors whilst the WHtR was the best discriminator for hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia in both sexes. To calculate waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), follow these simple steps: 1. Measure your waist circumference: at the narrowest part of your waist 2. Divide your waist circumference by your height. For example, if your waist circumference is 32 inches and your height is 5’2” ( 62”) your WHtR would be 32 divided by 62= 0.51 Here are the reference ranges for waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) for both men and women: For WOMEN WHtR 0.42- 0.48 Healthy weight with no risk WHtR between 0.49-0.53 : Overweight and Moderate risk WHtR between 0.54- 0.57 :Very overweight and high risk > or equal to 0.58 : Oese and very high risk For Men WHtR 0.43- 0.52 Healthy weight with no risk WHtR between 0.53- 0.57 : Overweight and Moderate risk WHtR between 0.58- 0.62 :Very overweight and high risk > or equal to 0.63 : Oese and very high risk So what is your WHtR?
