When a child can read at two but struggles to converse, people ask why. Hyperlexia is one answer. It’s a reminder that intelligence, language, and communication don’t all arrive the same way or on the same timeline. 🤍 #autism #autistic #hyperlexia #hyperlexic #autismawareness #autismacceptance #neurodivergent #neurodiversity

🥹🥹🥹 ✨ Why I started highlighting answers when teaching my hyperlexic Stage 4+ GLP to answer questions with Story Champs… Because our kids already have the language inside of them. When we highlight their strengths, they can see their own success, stay confident, and build on what they CAN do 💪💬. Some children we work with have hyperlexia—they can read big words at a young age but may struggle with comprehension or conversation. Highlighting answers helps them connect those amazing reading skills with understanding and real communication.🙌🏼 At Speech at the Beach, we use a strengths-based approach that empowers kids and families! 🌊💙

This video is from when my son turned 2. I was so excited watching him read, not yet realizing that many hyperlexic kids can read far above their age while still having difficulty with conversation. He’s always been obsessed with letters and numbers and signs. It’s one of the first things we noticed about him. #autism #autistic #hyperlexia #hyperlexic

💙💙 Via @jessie_and_the_family Therapy isn't the same for everyone! Take your time and choose the best for your autistic child. We learned the hard way had had to stao sery first time around. After that's we vowed to trust our gut and make we chose the right support for Finn. For us, that is sensory friendly, stimm accepting, neurodiverse affirming and coming from a place of inderstanding and patience's. And of course striving or a connection. Plus with Finn being twice exceptional we ne perapist who will incorporate special interes is sessions to help keep him engaged. I'm constantly updating and making sure we cover what we did up until meeting with her. That's means as his advocate I have to keep vigil and always everyone up to speed. And they're intense! 👇🏻 So much so that they've even been described as phobic-like (see: Kupperman et al. 1998 & Treffert Center's Hyperlexia Manual). Take Gordon, one of the first documented cases of hyperlexia in the literature, who "fights his fears with all the might of his little being." (Parker, 1917) But why do these specific themes of fears keep popping up amongst hyperlexic kids? What is it about the birthday song or cartoon characters? Hyperlexia is a condition where a child has an exceptionally advanced ability to read at a very young age — often well before they are expected to — but may struggle with spoken language, comprehension, or social communication🗣️ Types of Hyperlexia (commonly described): 1. Hyperlexia Type 1 – Neurotypical children who read early, but have no other developmental concerns. 2. Hyperlexia Type 2 – Children on the autism spectrum with precocious reading and significant language/social delays. 3. Hyperlexia Type 3 – Children who show hyperlexia and traits like those in autism, but do not meet criteria for autism long-term We support Jo by: 🔠Incorporating letters into play 🔠Modeling gestalts during play 🔠Writing or typing out language models 🔠Reading books full of gestalts 🔠Turning on captions in TV 🔠Adding gestalts in the AAC device My book ‘Jo’s Special Gifts’ mentions hyperlexia as an important autistic trait🥰 #autism #autismacceptance #autismawareness #autismmom #autistic #autismmoms #hyperlexia #hyperlexic #disabilityparenting #advocate #hyperlexiaawareness #hyperlexiasupport

My daughter is a dual processor (GLP and ALP). Most of her language has come from TV shows, songs, movies, and life events. She is also hyperlexic and despite being delayed in her language (in comparison into her mainstream peers at school) she is already reading books that are a year above her own year at school. One thing I love and always encourage is her love for having the captions on the TV. I’ve always assumed this was because she loves reading and perhaps it reinforces her understanding and learning language through TV. Recently, I asked her why she like having the captions on the TV and she told me it was for two reasons: - The first is because she wants to know what everybody is saying - The second reason is because she wants to know what everybody is thinking This made me realise that she very quickly caught on that any text that was in square brackets was to explain the emotional intent/experience or to label non-verbal communication. I love how resourceful our little neurodivergent children are and I wanted to share the story because we really need to trust their instincts! They are so creative and resourceful in how they understand and navigate this world and we can learn so much from them just taking a moment to pause, observe, and to not be so fearful of being child-led! #glp #gestaltlanguageprocessing #neurodivergent

One of the biggest reasons that many women were missed as ADHD, or neurodivergent in elementary school, is because of the stereotype of the “hyperactive boy.” Growing up as a millennial, ADHD was only understood through the lens of boys. ADHD in girls can look like being “chatty,” being hyperlexic, daydreaming, being generally, forgetful, being disorganized, or crying easily. if you suspect you might be neurodivergent, or might have ADHD, my 6 week workshop starts tomorrow, and I have FIVE spots left. We start with the basics: What is ND? ADHD? ASD? OCD? What did it look like in childhood, and what does it look like in adulthood? if you’re interested comment with “Me” and I’ll shoot you the link to read more and sign up!

The child in this video is a gestalt language processor and is beginning to produce his own (unscripted) grammar. In this video, you will hear me reading a book with him. He is also hyperlexic, which means that he learned to read on his own without being directly taught. He loves books with props and enjoys books about foods, which is why I chose this particular book for him. He uses Touch Chat with Word Power (AAC) to supplement his communication. Many times parents worry that using AAC will hinder their child’s verbal communication, but research says that’s actually not true and the opposite happens. Children who use AAC often become more verbal (*Please note every child is different and this is not a guarantee). AAC also enhances children’s literacy skills. I love using books with props and this particular book has been really fun to use with my gestalt language processors. The book is linked in my Amazon storefront and the props came from @SpeechTreeCo I’m so proud of how well this little guy is doing in speech and just wanted to share a glimpse into his world, hoping that it will help a parent or another therapist to support their gestalt language processor. Thank you for watching! For more ways to support your GLP’s speech and language, check out the digital resources linked in my profile. ♥️

#Autism 💙 Posted @withregram • @adhdmum_autisticson Hyperlexia 🫶🏼 Hyperlexia is when a child starts reading early and surprisingly beyond their expected ability. It’s often accompanied by an obsessive interest in letters and numbers, which develops as an infant. Hyperlexic children are usually Autistic. Our little angel, he is 1 in a million ❤️ It is so amazing to hear his wee voice and we hope and pray that one day, he will use his words to communicate with us, until then, keep reading baby boy! We are so proud of Freddie, every minute of every day 🫶🏼 #asd #autisticfamily #autisicson #sensory#parentssupportingparents #autism #hyperlexia #adhd #adhdmum #adhdmom #fife #earlysignsofautism #scottishfamily #asdpathway #autismpathway #mentalhealth #neurodivergent #neurodiverse #familyoffive #reel #fyp #scotland #asdpathway #hyperlexic @dunfermline.press @meaningfulspeech @bohospeechie @letscommunicate_slt
