Watch me do a tongue tie assessment on this newborn baby Many mums tell me their baby has been checked for tongue tie. But when they say ‘check’ I ask: did the healthcare provider do what I just showed you? The answer is usually ‘no’. No wander so many tongue ties are diagnosed without any basis and so many are missed. Unless the baby was assessed like in this video, with a full functional and anatomical examination as well as feeding assessment (breast or bottle, sometimes both), it is impossible to diagnose or exclude tongue tie. #drsilbersteinclinic #breastfeedingdoctoruk #ibclc #lactationconsultant #breastfeedingsupport #breastfeeding #tonguetie #breastfeedingmedicine #breastfeedingdoctor #breastfeedingtips #tonguetied #tonguetie #tonguetiebabies #tonguetiespecialist #tonguetiedivision #ankyloglossia

Sometimes a better latch starts before baby reaches the breast. If your baby is struggling to achieve a deep latch, a brief period of gentle head extension can help organize the muscles used for feeding. This position allows the baby to: • open the mouth more widely • bring the tongue forward • reduce tension in the floor of the mouth and chest • achieve better alignment for feeding Think of it as helping baby find the same head position they naturally use during breastfeeding This involves getting the chin up, airway open, and mouth ready to gape. A few important tips: • Move slowly and gently • Support baby’s head and trunk the entire time • Never force the extension — let baby guide the range • A little gentle rocking can help babies regulate and relax Once baby is calm and organized, bring them to the breast while maintaining that chin-up, head-extended position to support a deeper latch. Sometimes a few seconds of preparation can make the whole feeding feel easier 🩶. #breastfeeding #newborn #infantfeeding #ibclc #newbornfeeding

While this is a ‘get ready with me’ post - it doesn’t really matter what I do personally. ✨Before I explain why, FOLLOW @cocoonandcradle for more breastfeeding & sleep tips✨ What matters is that all mums know how to cosleep safely. Because we know the there is a huge percentage of mums, who even if they never planned on cosleeping, do so at some point. And when that happens, I don’t want those exhausted mums to unknowingly fall asleep with avoidable risk factors. For example, I have heard from so many mums that fell asleep feeding on a couch or sofa because they were so afraid of falling asleep in bed. However, we know that cosleeping on a recliner / couch / sofa is a huge risk factor and far more dangerous than falling asleep in a thoughtfully created and risk mitigated cosleeping environment. What I also know, is that fear mongering is not the answer. For those of you who are about to comment (hi there!) with statements like “you should never cosleep” etc. This doesn’t help. Blanket statements like this don’t stop mums from cosleeping (FYI it’s been happening since the dawn of time). They just make mums fearful to seek the support and education, so that they can make truly informed decisions when it comes to their little one’s sleep. And I’m not saying that all mums cosleep or even should cosleep. Everyone is different and what works for one family won’t work for another family. But for those mums who cosleep out of personal choice or pure exhaustion, I want them to be informed so that they can sleep as safely as possible. These recommendations in the reel come from world renowned cosleeping expert Dr James McKenna - and if you’d like to learn more I’d highly recommend his book Safe Infant Sleep. This is called an O-ball, and it's a great tool for building bottle skills 🍼 It's wonderful for a baby who is 3-4 months old and already grabbing toys and bringing them to their mouth. Here's how it works: you thread a bottle nipple through one of the smaller holes on the O-ball. The baby can hold the ball, bring it to their mouth, and practice sucking on the nipple without needing to take a full feeding. While they play with the ball, they're learning the mechanics of bottle feeding without all the pressure. And don't worry: sucking on an empty nipple does not make your baby gassy! You might hear the sound of air moving through the nipple hole, but they are not swallowing that air. It's just the sound of suction. This is one of the strategies I use when we're working on bottle refusal with breastfed babies. It helps them build comfort and competence with the bottle without the stress of feeding time. Have you tried the O-ball? Let me know in the comments. #ibclc #bottleskills #bottlerefusal #lactationproblems #lactationsupport

I hear myths like these every day in my clinic. Please make sure you have your baby assessed for tongue tie by a specialist only. We have the experience to decide if a tongue tie impacts on feeding or not. A simple glance in the mouth is not an assessment. Tongue ties can impact various aspects of feeding, breastfed or bottlefed babies alike. They can cause a range of symptoms. Sometimes breastfeeding can be comfortable, even when baby has a tongue tie. Tongue tied babies sometimes gain weight really well. Weight gain alone is not the only criteria to decide if a tongue tie needs to be treated. Posterior tongue ties are absolutely relevant and can sometimes impact on feeding more than an anterior, very visible frenulum. #mythbusting #tonguetie #tonguetied #tonguetiedbaby #tonguetierelease #tonguetieawareness #tonguetiespecialist #tonguetieprofessionals #tonguetieprocedure #ankyloglossia #breastfeedingmedicine #breastfeeding #bottlefeeding #bottlefedbaby #breastfedbaby #breastfeedingdoctoruk #drsilbersteinclinic #lactationconsultant #ibclc #feedingassessment #oralassessment #tonguefunction #tonguefunctionmatters

Focusing on your baby’s sleep posture is about so much more than just a cute photo – it’s about supporting their natural biology and oral function! 🌙✨ As an IBCLC, I look at the way a baby breathes and rests because humans are designed to be nasal breathers. For our littlest ones, keeping those lips gently closed during sleep is a major win for their long–term development. Here is why that “lips together” rest is so vital: The Science of Nasal Breathing: * **Jaw & Facial Development:** When the mouth is closed, the tongue can rest where it belongs – against the roof of the mouth. This provides the internal support needed for the jaw to grow wide and strong. * **Oral Health:** A closed–mouth posture prevents the oral tissues from drying out, which helps protect new teeth and gums. ## ⚠️ Safety and Support: While nasal breathing is the goal, **never use tape or physical restraints** to force a baby’s mouth shut. Infants must always be able to open their mouths freely to clear their airways if they become congested. If you notice your baby is consistently sleeping with an open mouth or struggling to maintain a lip seal, it is important to look at the "why” behind the posture. Your IBCLC can help identify if oral tension, tongue function, or structural issues are making it difficult for your baby to breathe and rest comfortably. **Healthy breaths lead to healthy growth!** 💤 #IBCLC #NasalBreathing #BabySleepTips

Have you ever noticed your baby pushing, kneading, or pressing on your breast while feeding? 🤍 Those little hands aren’t just wandering! They’re actually doing something really important. And believe it or not, their hands aren't getting in their way either. In the really early days, babies use their hands to navigate and find the breast to feed. I remember continually pulling my babies hands "out of her way" because it seemed like they were keeping her from feeding properly, but it was actually the opposite. Her hands were helping her! Additionally, babies have natural instincts that help them get the milk they need. When they press, squeeze, or “knead” the breast, it can help stimulate milk flow and encourage additional let-downs. It’s their tiny way of helping the milk move a little faster while they feed. AND this can also be comforting and regulating for them! While they’re feeding, your baby is getting warmth, safety, and connection. Touching, holding, and pressing helps them stay close and engaged during the feed. Your baby knows exactly what they’re doing! #breastfeedingjourney #breastfeeding #ibclc #lactation #newborn

Most of the sleep advice we hear feels universal… But it’s not. For many cultures around the world: Night waking is expected.
Bedsharing is normal.
Responsive feeding is encouraged.
And “cry it out”?
Barely exists. Because biologically speaking — babies aren’t designed to sleep alone. They’re designed to sleep close. Close to the breast.
Close to warmth.
Close to regulation.
Close to safety. So when your baby wakes… When they need feeding, holding, or reassurance… You’re not creating bad habits. You’re responding exactly how human babies have been cared for across generations and cultures. You’re not doing sleep wrong. You’re just parenting outside a very Western lens. I’d love to know — how does this make you feel about your little one’s sleep? Relieved?
Validated?
