IB should cancel exams in the Middle East… But they probably won’t I want to start by saying something first. I made a video about this recently, some of you reached out. And you were right. I focused too much on whether exams would be cancelled and not enough on what you can actually do right now. If that came across as insensitive, that’s on me. That wasn’t the intention. So I’ve taken that feedback seriously. Because the situation isn’t fair. But here are three things that can actually help you move forward. Replace your teacher where you can. If you’re not getting enough through remote teaching, you need to create it yourself. Use AI like a tutor. Ask it questions constantly. Ask it to explain things in simple terms. Use voice mode and talk through topics out loud. If you can afford a paid version, great. If not, the free version is still powerful. The goal is simple: don’t stay stuck on anything. Lean on your classmates. Everyone around you is going through the same thing. Use that. Share notes. Share resources. Explain topics to each other. It helps with motivation, but also with understanding. You don’t have to do this alone. Focus on efficiency, not hours. You might not have the same study conditions right now. So every hour has to count more. Reading notes passively won’t cut it. Use active recall. Blurting. Flashcards. Past papers. Explaining things out loud. Anything that forces you to think. If you adapt properly, you can still do very well. And again, I appreciate the feedback on the last video.

IB exams were cancelled in the UAE yesterday. And now it’s expanding. I just received this message from an IB coordinator (sharing anonymously): “It’s official — the IB has recognized the NEM for Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. I’m a DP coordinator and just received the info.” A few important things to understand. This does not automatically cancel exams across the whole country. What it means is that the IB has recognized a Non-Examination Route (NEM) for these countries. But for it to apply, a school’s IB coordinator has to request it. So the situation may look different depending on your school. Some schools may switch to the non-exam route. Others may still continue with exams. If you’re a student in one of these countries, the best thing you can do right now is check with your school or IB coordinator directly, because they’re the ones who will know whether your school is applying for it. And if you’re in one of these regions, feel free to comment what you’re hearing from your school — it helps everyone stay informed. Here’s the official statement released alongside the petition at ipetitions.com: We are IB students from the Middle East asking the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to reconsider requiring students in our region to sit the May 2026 examinations under the current circumstances. Students across United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iran, Palestine, and Iraq are living in a region affected by ongoing conflict, instability, and geopolitical tension. Airspace restrictions, travel disruptions, and constant uncertainty are affecting daily life across the region. Even for those not in areas directly impacted by violence, the atmosphere of anxiety, fear, and distraction makes it extremely difficult to prepare for one of the most demanding academic programs in the world. IB exams are already highly stressful, and expecting students in our region to perform at their best under these conditions places them at a clear disadvantage compared to students in more stable environments. The issue is not simply whether exams can physically take place, but whether students can realistically prepare for them at the level required. Many students are struggling to focus on studying because of constant stress, safety concerns, and regional instability. We are not necessarily asking for the May 2026 exams to be cancelled worldwide. We are asking the IB to recognize that students in the Middle East are not working under normal conditions. Fair alternatives could include a non-exam route based on coursework, internal assessments, and predicted grades, adjusted grade boundaries, or region-specific policies for affected countries. The IB values fairness, international-mindedness, and student wellbeing. We ask the IBO to uphold these values by reconsidering the May 2026 examinations for students in the Middle East and implementing fair alternatives that reflect the reality we are facing. Do you think the IB will cancel exams or further support affected students in the region? Comment your thoughts and share this post to spread the message! #ib #ibo #news #ibnews #ibdp

IB exams have officially been cancelled in Qatar and the UAE. As for other countries in the region, the IB issued this statement: As conflict continues to disrupt schooling across parts of the Middle East, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is working closely with schools, governments and education authorities to support students scheduled to take their Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP) assessments in the May 2026 session. In most cases, IB examinations are expected to proceed as planned. Decisions on whether examinations take place are made by national or local authorities, depending on the country, who are best placed to make decisions that align with their national education system. The IB remains in close contact with partners across the region as the situation evolves. To support schools and students facing disruption, the IB has introduced a range of measures designed to provide flexibility, reduce pressure, and ensure continuity of learning and assessment where possible. These include extensions to coursework deadlines, additional guidance for teachers, access arrangements for students affected by adverse circumstances, and options for students to defer or adjust assessment plans. In exceptional cases where examinations cannot be conducted safely due to conflict, and where no other mitigation measures are possible, government authorities may decide to apply the IB’s Non-Exam Contingency Measure (NECM). This is a safety-led, last-resort approach that enables students to receive results based on externally assessed coursework and teacher-predicted grades, using established IB standards and quality assurance processes. “The IB is a holistic and rigorous educational experience, and we are confident students are well prepared for their next step,” said Olli-Pekka Heinonen, Director General of the International Baccalaureate. “We understand the uncertainty and pressure many students and families are facing. These are complex circumstances that require difficult decisions. The examination route remains our preferred approach, but our focus is to ensure every student can continue their education and progress with confidence.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has confirmed that exams in the UAE will be cancelled, with students instead assessed using predicted grades and coursework—similar to the system used during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, students in other Middle Eastern countries are still expected to sit for their exams, sparking widespread backlash over fairness and consistency. Students across the region have voiced frustration, arguing that many countries are facing similar conditions yet are being treated differently. One student wrote, “if one country is canceled all of us should be too… it’s only logical because we’re the same region.” Others described the emotional strain of continuing to study amid instability, with one saying, “I can barely study… I’m so distracted because of everything.” Concerns have also emerged about the academic impact of the decision. Some students fear that alternative grading methods in the UAE could skew results, with one comment noting, “their grades will likely be inflated… and thus grade boundaries will be higher.” This has led to anxiety among those still taking exams, who worry they may be unfairly disadvantaged. Reports suggest that countries including Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan are continuing with in-person exams, further intensifying calls for a more unified regional approach. Critics argue the situation contradicts the IB’s commitment to fairness, with one student stating, “IB preaches to be fair… but they’re not taking into consideration our countries.” Do you think the IB should cancel exams for all countries in the region? More information is expected to be revealed tomorrow. Stay tuned. #ib #ibo #news #ibnews #ibdp
