Igas festival is a popular festival in Uttarakhand and a state holiday. It is a folk festival and is also known as Igas Bagwal, Igas Diwali and Budhi Deepawali. The festival of Igas is celebrated by singing and dancing with bhailo which is made by combining small bundles of dry wood of sesame, leaves of bhangjire (a Himalayan herb), and pine. After the worship of deities during the day, people from nearby places gather at one place and play Bhailo. In Uttrakhand and Himachal Diwali is celebrated after few days of actual Diwali because of local tradition and believe they celebrate Diwali in a unique way traditional dance, traditional songs and combined society. In most of the places Diwali is associated with the local deities and people dance in local attires and also perform the rituals .budhi diwali celebrated in the middle Himalayas and is the biggest festival of middle Himalayas across the borders. In mountains Diwali have so many names like in some parts it is said igas bagwal,And in some other parts it is said budhi diwali and mangsir bagwal. Also in some parts local festivals celebrated like the devlang is the biggest celebration of rawain valley. In some areas of Garhwal, Igas Bagwal is celebrated for 11 days after Diwali. Similarly,Budhi Diwali is celebrated after one month after Diwali in some areas of Uttarkashi, Tehri, and Jaunsar. However, the stories behind both are different in some parts. What is igaas? - There is a tradition of celebrating Igaas Bagwal in Uttarakhand just eleven days after Diwali. The festival is mainly celebrated in the Garhwal and Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. According to mythological belief, the news of Lord Ram return to Ayodhya from exile reached 11 days late to the residents of upper hilly regions. So, people in Uttarakhand started celebrating Diwali on Ekadashi, eleven days after Deepawali and it came to be called as ‘Igaas Diwali’. . . . There is a different story related to the celebration of Igaas festival in the royal era. It is said that in the 17th century when Veer Madho Singh Bhandari went to fight the battle of Tibet, people did not celebrate Diwali. But when he returned after winning the battle, the festival of Igas was celebrated as Deepawali by lighting the entire area with diyas.
