This landmark decision, announced by the #IOC under the leadership of President Kirsty Coventry, limits eligibility for all female category events—both individual and team sports—exclusively to biological females. Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych made headlines during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, but not because he was barred from competing over a helmet issue. Heraskevych was allowed to compete and completed his runs; however, his helmet drew attention because it featured a small blue-and-yellow heart symbol representing the Ukrainian flag. At the time, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had strict rules limiting political statements or demonstrations during competition, and there were questions about whether certain symbols might violate Rule 50, which restricts political messaging on the field of play. He was not disqualified or prevented from competing due to his helmet. In fact, he raced normally and later gained additional global attention when he held up a small sign reading “No War in Ukraine” after one of his runs, which sparked discussion about athlete expression during the Games.
