Feeling anxious or overwhelmed? You’re not alone. Here are three physical grounding techniques to help you self-regulate your nervous system and regain inner balance: • Breath of joy - When we are anxious we tend to breathe in the chest, which is why this three-part breathing technique helps us fully fill up the lungs and the forceful exhale is a great way to help release pent-up tension. • Self holding/self soothing - when we are triggered as adults, it’s difficult to regulate potentially disruptive emotions like anger, fear, anxiety and sadness. Connecting with our body helps to ground us when we are feeling overstimulated. With one hand on our head and one hand on our heart, we can encourage ourselves out of the mind and into the heart space, telling our nervous system we are safe. • Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) - Muscle tension is one way that our body responds to feelings of anxiety. This technique is a way to own that tension and allow it to dissolve. Going through the major muscle groups in the body (from forehead to toes or the other way around), we tense and relax them, noticing whether there are any differences in sensation. Self regulation becomes our ally as we navigate life’s challenges. It’s our path to choosing responses aligned with our values as we learn to respond consciously rather than react impulsively to difficult situations. In doing so we become aware of the kinds of thoughts, emotions and actions we want to shape our life. Have you given these a try before?
