THSometimes, we trainers & trainees forget that exercises are NOT our parents and that we don’t have to be emotionally attached to them. So when someone points out a flaw in our favorite exercise, we form an angry mob and get ready to go to (internet debate) WAR. 😂

It’s a funny thing to watch, but it has a problem: The problem with forming angry mobs over our favorite exercise being attacked is that it leads to us missing opportunities to test potentially BETTER training exercises.

I know that from PERSONAL experience: I remember when I thought the Back Squat was THE best lower body exercise out there. So when someone told me that I should try out Weighted Single Leg Squats for a time and see what would happen to my Back Squat, I thought they were crazy. And I TOLD them exactly how crazy I thought they were... 😂🤦🏾♂️

But later, I tried doing what they said. I had to because I lost access to the gym where I would do Back Squats. And you know what happened? My Back Squat improved AND I found out that Weighted Single Leg Squats let me make gains on other movements for free like Dragon Squats! 🙈😂

I could have tried it out earlier, and maybe gained even better, but I was too attached to the idea of the Back Squat being the best lower body exercise out there to hear that persons advice.

What I learned from that experience is that exercises aren’t our family. When someone insults a family member, it’s understandable to get a bit upset. We’re emotionally attached to them. But when someone points out an objective flaw our favorite exercise, that’s not a situation where we have to jump to its defense. In fact, it’s a situation where we can learn something new that might improve our training for the REST of our lives. Or at the VERY least, save time on an internet debate. 😂

Learn from my previous mistakes. When you look at an exercise, remember that it’s not your family. It doesn’t deserve your emotional attachment. Try looking at it objectively and seeing what credit that exercise DOES deserve. You may find something that will improve your training forever! 💪
