SADuring my own job search, I realized something important:
👉 The difference between getting ignored vs getting interviews often comes down to who is advocating for you internally.
Referrals change the game.
Here’s the simple strategy I’ve seen work repeatedly for job seekers (especially newcomers and early-career professionals).
Save this for later.
Step 1: Who should you ask for referrals?
In this order:
1️⃣ Direct acquaintances
People who already know you.
2️⃣ Your LinkedIn connections
Even weak connections can help.
3️⃣ People with the “Hiring” label on LinkedIn
Go to:
Company page → People → search “Hiring”
4️⃣ People active on LinkedIn
Check who has posted or commented recently.
💡 Pro tip:
Aim for 8–10 people per company, not just one.
Step 2: What to message (templates)
Connection request
Hi [Name],
I came across an opening at [Company] for [Role] and noticed you work there.
I’m currently working as a [your role] and have experience in [relevant skill/area].
Would really appreciate connecting and learning more about the team.
If they accept your request, message:
Hi [Name],
Thanks for accepting my request.
I recently applied to the [Role] position at [Company] and would really appreciate a referral if possible.
Sharing my resume here.
Happy to provide any additional details if helpful.
Thank you!
Then, Follow-up message:
Hi [Name],
Just checking in to see if you had a chance to refer me for the [Role] position at [Company].
Also wanted to ask if there’s a specific portal or recruiter I should follow up with to track my application.
Thanks again for your support!”
One mistake many people make
They ask for referrals…
but never follow up.
Once I started tracking referrals and following up, my interview chances increased 2–3x.
