Four astronauts, aboard NASA’s Artemis II mission, have set off on a 10-day trip around the Moon that would be the farthest humans have ever travelled, and a major step toward returning people to the lunar surface this decade. The mission was launched from Florida Wednesday. Revived in 2017-18 under Donald Trump, NASA’s Artemis programme refocused human spaceflight on the Moon using the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft. After delays, it achieved a major milestone in 2022 with Artemis I: an uncrewed mission that successfully orbited the Moon and validated key systems for future crewed flights. Artemis II will begin with one to two days of system checks in Earth orbit before a translunar injection burn sends Orion towards the Moon. Over days three and four, the crew will monitor spacecraft performance in deep space. Orion will then pass behind the Moon on a "free-return" trajectory—a path that naturally swings the spacecraft back toward Earth without requiring additional propulsion. The spacecraft will reach its greatest distance from Earth during this phase. During days five to eight, they will head back while continuing key tests, before a high-speed re-entry and Pacific splashdown conclude the mission, validating systems for future lunar landings.
