THE FINAL NIGHT - Led Zeppelin walking off the stage of Madison Square Garden (New York City, 1973) after putting on a blistering performance that would go down as some of their best shows in their 11 year stint. Following the arrival of Houses of the Holy on March 28th, the band landed in Atlanta six weeks later for what would turn out to be the largest concert (at the time) in the history of the state of Georgia, drawing over 39,000 fans to Braves Stadium on May 4th. The next night in Tampa, the band drew a massive 56,800 fans to Tampa Stadium. A true phenomenon was clearly underway, as the band broke The Beatles‘ record for the largest single concert in U.S. history. Today marks the anniversary of Zeppelin’s final night in NYC shooting The Song Remains the Same. Zeppelin had already released four wildly successful albums in Led Zeppelin I, II, III, and IV, but a rock and roll concert tour of this scale had never been seen before. The band would continue setting concert attendance records across the country. By the time the band rolled into Madison Square Garden on July 27th for a three-night, mid-summer run at the New York City arena, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham were firing on all cylinders and likely appreciative of the relatively small confines that the venue had to offer. The band was at the tail end of their tour, and management organized a professional film crew to shoot all three shows—the footage eventually was used in 1976’s epic behind-the-scenes concert film The Song Remains The Same. The pro-shot live footage on The Song Remains The Same is undeniable in highlighting arguably the best band in the world in 1973, no question. The shows were amazing, and by the third and final night, the New York City crowd was bursting with anticipation. The setlist for the July 29th, 1973 show is something out of a dream. Opening with “Rock and Roll”, Zeppelin treated their New York fans to classic arena rock anthems like “Stairway to Heaven”, “Whole Lotta Love”, and “Black Dog” with material from their new album, with “No Quarter”, “The Ocean”, and “Rain Song” all being included in the set. Enjoy

Interesting fact: When Led Zeppelin reunited for the Celebration Day concert at the O2 Arena, “Kashmir” was the song the world was waiting for. This track is that despite its name, it has nothing to do with the region in South Asia. Robert Plant wrote the lyrics while driving through the desolate Sahara Desert in Morocco. He was struck by the idea of a “traveler in time and space,” and Jimmy Page matched that energy with a “staircase” guitar riff that uses a unique DADGAD tuning. This creates that haunting, Eastern-influenced drone that makes the song feel like a ritual. On this night, with the “Son of a God”, Jason Bonham filling his late father John’s seat on the drums, the band achieved a level of sonic power that hadn’t been felt since 1980. When Billy Strings takes on “Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin, it’s not just a cover—it’s a reinvention. Originally released in 1969 on ‘Led Zeppelin II’, the song is one of Zeppelin’s most iconic acoustic-leaning tracks, blending folk textures with the band’s signature rock mysticism. Billy Strings brings it into the bluegrass world with blistering flatpicking and a faster tempo, turning the classic into a jam-ready showcase of modern acoustic Americana. By keeping the spirit of Jimmy Page’s original composition while injecting his own Appalachian-style energy, Billy bridges two musical worlds—proving that great songs can travel just as far as the rambling they sing about. #billystrings #ledzeppelin #americanamusic #americanaqueue

Music has always flirted with taboo language, and references to demons, Lucifer, or selling your soul show up far more often than people realize. In rock, artists like The Rolling Stones with Sympathy for the Devil and Black Sabbath built entire aesthetics around dark, occult imagery. It wasn’t hidden. It was theatrical. But for many listeners, it felt like something more. Then there’s the phenomenon of “backmasking” — claims that secret phrases can be heard when songs are played in reverse. Bands like Led Zeppelin were accused of embedding satanic messages in tracks like Stairway to Heaven, especially during the moral panic of the 1980s. Courts were even involved at one point, though no credible evidence ever confirmed intentional hidden messages. In hip hop and pop, darker symbolism often shows up visually rather than lyrically — inverted crosses, ritual imagery, references to contracts and souls. Artists from Kanye West to Doja Cat have used provocative imagery that sparked viral debates about whether it’s pure artistry, marketing shock value, or something deeper. The pattern is undeniable: the more forbidden the symbolism, the more powerful the reaction. Whether it’s performance art, rebellion against religion, or something more symbolic about fame and power, the tension between music and “demonic” imagery has been feeding curiosity for decades. 👁️

Released in 1972 as the second single from their debut album Can’t Buy a Thrill, Steely Dan’s “Reeling in the Years” features what is widely considered one of the greatest guitar solos in rock history. While the track peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, its cultural data point is anchored by the performance of session guitarist Elliott Randall. The solo was so impactful that Jimmy Page famously cited it as his favorite guitar solo of all time, a massive endorsement considering Led Zeppelin was at its commercial zenith in the early 70s. The history of the recording is a great-great example of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s perfectionism, especially about their instruments. Randall reportedly nailed the entire complex solo in just one take after the duo had struggled with other guitarists for days. This moment of spontaneous brilliance helped propel Can’t Buy a Thrill to Platinum status and established Steely Dan as a band that demanded elite-level musicianship, regardless of who was an “official” member. Today, with over 150 million streams on Spotify, the solo remains a historical benchmark for the transition from 60s blues-rock to the sophisticated, jazz-inflected studio perfection that defined the 70s. “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin creates a powerful sense of travel, mystery, and vast landscapes. The lyrics were inspired by Robert Plant’s journeys through desert regions and the feeling of being surrounded by endless horizons. Rather than telling a specific story, the song focuses on atmosphere and imagery, describing a spiritual and almost dreamlike journey through distant lands. The song’s hypnotic structure mirrors that feeling of a long, powerful journey. Jimmy Page’s iconic repeating riff, combined with John Bonham’s thunderous drums and orchestral arrangements, creates a sound that feels massive and cinematic. Released in 1975 on the album Physical Graffiti, “Kashmir” became one of Led Zeppelin’s most celebrated songs because of its unique sound and the way it transports listeners into a world of exploration, mystery, and limitless landscapes.
