The most beautiful shark in the sea, Stegostoma tigrinum. Known commonly in many places as either a leopard shark or zebra shark. I’ve been so fortunate to photograph many of these beautiful animals on the Ningaloo. They vary in colouration from golden, to white to brown, some with big spots some without. We definitely don’t encounter them very often but when we do it’s absolutely magical. #divinglife  #oneocean #underwaterlife #underwaterworld #BBCWildlifePOTD #EarthCapture #coralreef #ocean #scuba #marineanimals #oceanography #divingphoto #scubadivinglife #scubadiving  #oneocean #underwaterlife #natgeo #wildlife #naturegeography #earthfocus #earthpix #canonphotography #canon #nauticam #leopardshark #shark #zebrashark #wildlifephotography #marinelife #nature #marinebiology #ningalooreef

Leopard sharks are truly one of the most captivating fish found in our kelp forest, graceful, curious, and completely misunderstood. With their iconic spotted patterns (each one totally unique, like a fingerprint), these sharks cruise the shallows in calm confidence, often gathering in large groups near sandy bottoms and eelgrass beds. They’re harmless to humans, give live birth, and rely heavily on healthy coastal ecosystems to survive. In Southern California, our bays and kelp forests serve as critical nursery grounds for them which means protecting these habitats protects their future

Leopard Shark or Zebra Shark? We might not all agree on the name, but surely we can all agree they’re one of the most beautiful sharks in our oceans. Just look at that pattern!! The detail, the colour, the tail, everything about them is just incredible. They’re so curious and inquisitive too, always coming in for a closer look. I still can’t believe how fortunate I was to spend so many months diving with these incredibly unique sharks, and to think it won’t be long until they’re back at the rock 🐆 #underwaterphotography #uwphotography #oceanographicmag #ocean #scubadiving #marinelifephotography #sharks #leopardshark #zebrashark #shark #bbcearth #paditv #uwvideography #nationalgeographic #oceanlife

Leopard shark or Zebra shark?🦈🪸🐠 🎥 @josepostigo Names “leopard shark” and “zebra shark” are used interchangeably depending on where you are. However, they are distinct species. 🦓🦈🐆🦈 This one in the video, (Stegostoma fasciatum), is a carpet shark known in the United States as the zebra shark and in Australia and generally Indo-Pacific region as the leopard shark. It is a tropical, bottom-dwelling, large shark (around 8 feet / 2.4 m) that looks striped as a juvenile, spotted as an adult, and has distinctive ridges. It feeds nocturnally on invertebrates and small fish around coral reefs and sand flats. 🦈🦐🪸 On the other hand, (Triakis semifasciata) — commonly called the leopard shark in the United States — is a houndshark found along the Pacific coast of North America from Oregon to the Gulf of California. It has a slender body with black saddle-like markings and large spots and grows to about 5 feet (1.5 m). Its diet is similar. 🦈🐠🪸 #ocean #underwater #coral #coralreef #oceanlife #marinebiology #marineconservation #restoration #coralrestoration #leopardshark #anemones #dolphins #narwhal #otter #conservation #diving #snorkling #antarctica #zebrashark #penguins #whale #whales #whaleshark #humpbackwhale #seaslug #turtle #seaturtle #manatee #oceanthemajesty #killerwhale

SHARK SPOTLIGHT: Leopard Sharks – But Not All Are the Same! 🐆 🦈 What do you call a shark with spots? Depends where you are in the world! In this stunning footage by @jays_visions, we showcase the sharks which are actually called: Leopard sharks! This is in contrast to the zebra (also known as leopard) which we frequently see in Thailand 🇺🇸 Leopard Shark (Triakis semifasciata) – Found along the Pacific coast of North America. Sleek, spotted, and prefers cooler, shallow waters like kelp forests and estuaries. 🇹🇭 Zebra Shark (Stegostoma tigrinum) – Found across the Indo-Pacific, including Thailand. As adults, they have a long tail and leopard-like spots – but as pups, they’re stripy like a zebra! 🦓➡️🐆 Same nickname, very different sharks! 🌍 This is why marine education matters — when we understand what we’re seeing, we protect it better 💙 Which one have you seen in the wild? So this shark was definitely NOT dying. It was just found on a state of tonic immobility, in an inverted body position, allowing me to get as close as I wanted. This happens when sharks feel a pressure on their caudal fin or when their “ampullae of Lorenzini” (located around their eyes and snout) is overestimulated. In this case the leopard shark was trying to shake off a remora that was getting too close to its snout and eyes ending up in this state of tonic immobility. Sometimes sharks can remain like this for up to 15 minutes. There’s evidence to suggest that orcas use tonic immobility to prey on sharks, as the sharks remain defenceless. #westernaustralia #australia #leopardshark #whaleshark #australiascoralcoast #ningalooreef #coralreef #marineconservation #protectwhatyoulove #exmouth #vanlife #surflife #travelawesome #freediving #explorer #oceanlover #oceanlife #yourshotphotographer #surfphotography #exploringtheglobe #discoverocean #earthcapture #exploretheworld #underwaterphotography #underwaterphotographer #surfer #naturelover #naturephotographer #natgeo

✨This Leopard Shark, Stegostoma Tigrinum, experiences an incredible trance-like state, referred as tonic immobility. And the culprit of it all: a small remora up to no good🙏🏽😎✨ 📖 When remoras attach to a host shark, they’ll benefit off the scraps leftover when the shark feeds (as well as receiving protection and a free ocean ride); but they will also provide a great service to it, by feeding on dead skin and parasites. Although this mutually beneficial simbiosis has two winners, life in such close proximity comes with its challenges 😅 🧬 Tonic immobility happens across many species, like birds, mammals, reptiles and fish. Yet it still remains a natural behaviour very little understood among sharks and rays. 🦈 Many species of sharks would go into tonic immobility in an inverted body position, if having pressure applied on the caudal fin, or by overstimulating the ampullae of Lorenzini (located around the eyes and snout). 🚨 The later is what happened to this most beautiful shark as the remora moved too close to the eyes and snout, and as much as the shark attempted to shake it off, well, you can see the results for yourself 💫 Note: the shark was perfectly ok and unharmed, only visibly annoyed with the remora 🙌🏽😅 📍 Ningaloo Reef 🎥 @goproanz . . . . . #freediving #underwater #gopro #goproanz #shark #sharkeducation #sharkoftheweek #pelagic #megafauna #australiascoralcoast #underwaterphotography #ocean #marinelife #sea #sealife #viral #trending #reels #fish #coralcoast #australia #Ningaloo #westernaustralia #marineconservation #elasmobranch #protectwhatyoulove #ausgeo #zebrashark #leopardshark
