CRPaul McCartney had a vivid dream of his mother, Mary McCartney, who had died when he was only 14.
In the dream, she looked beautiful and calm. She told him, “It will be all right, just let it be.” Paul woke up feeling a massive sense of relief and immediately went to the piano to write the song.
Interestingly, Paul was actually terrified when he first wrote the melody. Because it came to him so perfectly in a dream, he was convinced he had subconsciously stolen it from someone else. He spent weeks playing the tune for friends, asking, “Is this someone else’s song? Have you heard this before?” Only after everyone said “No” did he finally accept it was his own.
