HIOne of America’s most iconic symbols, the Liberty Bell was cast in 1753.
Local metalworkers John Pass and John Stow created the bell for the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia, now known as Independence Hall. The bell summoned lawmakers to their meetings and alerted Philadelphians about proclamations and public meetings.
Interestingly, there is no record stating that the Liberty Bell rang to announce the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. However, historians believe it most likely rang on July 8, 1776, when the Declaration was first read aloud to the public.
As the British advanced on Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War, citizens quickly removed the Liberty Bell from its tower, knowing the British would likely melt it down. It was transported under heavy guard to Allentown, Pennsylvania where it was safely hidden under a church’s floor boards.
The bell’s inscription, taken from the Old Testament, reads: Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof.

FIFOUND: Philly's forgotten 80-foot tall, 42-ton Liberty Bell. For the nation's 150th birthday in 1926, the city built the gigantic bell as the dramatic entrance to the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition. The bell was demantled soon after the fair ended.
