Today marks 26 years to the day that the Mexican wolf was reintroduced into Arizona. Even though their population is on the rise, this doesn’t mean reintroductions have stopped. 🐺Just last year Lorenzo the Mexican wolf left our facility in Glen Rose to pair with a female from Wolf Conservation Center in New York. The hope is that they have now bred and will be released from their acclimation facility in Mexico to become a wild Mexican wolf. 🐺Not only are adult wolves the subject of releases but pups are too! Hard to believe? The process is called cross-fostering and it involves a brand new pup pulled from their litter in captivity. Then with the help of Lighthawk and their pilots, who donate their time and their planes, these pups are flown to a wild den and introduced with a recently born litters to be raised as a wild wolf. #loboweek #savethewolves #mexicanwolf

This week we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reintroduction of Mexican gray wolves (lobos) in the American southwest. As the rarest subspecies of gray wolf in North America, this charismatic canid was at risk of going extinct mainly due to human intolerance. In 1976, a bi-national recovery effort began and the remaining five Mexican gray wolves were collected from the wild to start a captive breeding program. In March of 1998, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service released 11 wolves into the wild. Due to continued efforts, today over 240 lobos roam the southwestern United States. Join us on March 27 and 29 at 12 p.m. for a special wolf enrichment feeding to celebrate #LoboWeek 🐺

It’s #LoboWeek! Twenty-five years ago this week, Mexican gray wolves were reintroduced in the U.S. Southwest. A recent wolf census found 241 of these incredible carnivores living in Arizona and New Mexico — up from zero in the late 1970s. This improvement is hard won, but there’s still work to do. In order for Mexican gray #wolves to survive *and* thrive, the @USFWS needs to bolster their declining genetic diversity and resume the releases of family packs of wolves, among other things. We've worked to protect Mexican gray wolves for decades. We’ll keep fighting to make sure they have a future in the wild, right where they belong. 🐺 🎥: Arizona Game and Fish Department

It’s the last day of #LoboWeek and Wolf Haven International is honored to play a part in the conservation of this incredible species! Wolf Haven has participated in the Mexican Wolf Saving Animals From Extinction (formerly Species Survival Plan) program since 1994, as both a captive-breeding facility and a pre-release facility. The program now manages a captive population of over 400 Mexican wolves in 60 facilities across the U.S. and Mexico. Some of these Mexican wolves will be candidates for release into the wild, while the rest remain in captivity as part of the selective breeding program. Wolves selected for release, and pups that are cross-fostered in wild dens, will join one of the free-ranging populations of Mexican wolves in the southwestern U.S. or northern Mexico, contributing to the preservation of their critically endangered species for years to come. – ¡Es el último día de #LoboWeek y Wolf Haven International es sumamente honrado de participar en la conservación de esta increíble especie! Desde 1994, Wolf Haven ha participado como institución de reproducción en cautiverio y como instalación pre-liberación en el programa Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE, anteriormente Species Survival Plan) para el lobo mexicano. El programa actualmente maneja una población cautiva de más de 400 lobos mexicanos en 60 instalaciones en los Estados Unidos y México.
