CHMost handlers think they’re using a long line correctly.
In reality, poor line management is one of the biggest reasons dogs lose clarity, timing, and reliable recall.
It’s not the tool — it’s how the line is being handled.
Long-line work is about using leash pressure intentionally and with nuance — not just applying pressure, but recognizing and rewarding every yield your dog offers in response to it. This level of precision is impossible if the line isn’t being managed cleanly.
When the long line is bunched up in one or both hands, it tangles easily, drags on the ground, and robs you of accuracy. You lose timing. You miss pressure-and-release opportunities.
Holding the leash in one hand while managing the line with the other keeps the line clean, off the ground, and away from the dog’s legs. It allows you to stay organized, responsive, and clear.
This is a skill anyone can develop with practice — whether you’re a professional trainer or a dedicated dog owner.
Becoming proficient with a long line opens an entirely new dimension of training that simply isn’t available on a standard-length leash. It’s essential for teaching a dog to follow and critical when building a reliable recall.
The way I manage the long line in this video is my personal style and the way I teach my students, while fully acknowledging it may not feel natural to everyone at first.
I’m extremely right-hand dominant, yet I prefer to hold the line in my right hand and manage it with my left. That’s simply what works best for me.
There’s no absolute right or wrong — only what’s effective. But if you find yourself tangled in the line or missing communication moments, I recommend trying this method or a variation of it to see if your handling improves.
In the end, the method you choose is entirely up to you.
