This is not an observation deck- the space is 21+ and runs a lengthy waitlist most nights. there is a one drink/food item minimum once you are up there. You must check-in at the desk downstairs before taking the elevator up. Thanks 🙏🏻 @overstory . . . #newyork #nyc #explorenyc #visitnyc #nybucketlist #travel #bigapplenewyork

Kinda Interesting Things #197: The Sidewalk Clock on Maiden Lane If you’re strolling through Lower Manhattan, at the intersection of Broadway and Maiden Lane, and look down at the sidewalk on the northeast side, you’ll notice this clock that looks out of place. This is the Sidewalk Clock on Maiden Lane. In the 1880s, Lower Manhattan’s Maiden Lane was mainly occupied by goldsmiths and watchmakers. Among them was William Barthman, a German-born jeweler who opened a small shop in 1884 and quickly became known for inventive marketing and high-end craftsmanship. Barthman wanted a way to stand out in a district crowded with clocks in display windows. Around 1898-1899, Barthman and his employee Frank Homm devised a bold idea: a working clock set directly into the sidewalk, so that anyone walking by would look down and see the time beneath their feet. Homm engineered a mechanism strong enough to withstand foot traffic yet precise enough to keep accurate time. At night, it would glow, and it served as a public service and an advertisement for Barthman Jewelers. The clock became a local landmark. It was a meeting point, and a way to check the hour long before pocket watches or wristwatches were universal. Newspapers of the era marveled at the novelty of a “pavement clock.” Sources: “Fixed in Cement, Not in Time” (New York Times, 1993) “The Story Of New York’s Sidewalk Clock” (Hodinkee, 2013) “This Restored NYC Clock is Really Something to Look Down Upon” (NY1, 2018) “The Clock in The SideWalk” (William Barthman) “What Happened to the Barthman Sidewalk Clock?” (Untapped New York, 2018) “Barthman’s Sidewalk Clock” (Atlas Obscura, 2014)
